The Women We've Left Behind

While in this country, feminists think the single greatest threat to their rights is the American right, women in other countries know better.

I don't have time to post all my thoughts on this, but my sister thought I should post this story here, to serve up some perspective.

It's not so much the tragedy of her driving and killing herself, it's the reminder that women in these countries have. no. rights.

And here we wail about Palin and a ruling that will never be repealed.

Most Islamic countries do not limit the behavior of women as much as Saudi Arabia. However, most have some form of Sharia Law which speaks to the attire and behavior of women. Many of the countries condone honor killings, where the perpetrator is slapped on the wrist or not arrested at all.
There are now counties in England that are allowing the Islamic community to practice a form of Sharia law. I have not heard if they are trying to limit the behavior of women but the Islamic courts have dealt with some divorce cases that have come to the attention of English press.
I refer you to an article from the Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/19/AR2006051901769_pf.html that discusses the curriculum of the Wahhabi schools in America.
I feel that we as a gender are not paying attention to what is happening to our gender in the world. We also do not pay attention to the growth of the religion of Islam in our country. I don't care what people believe for themselves but I do start caring if I have to conform to their beliefs.
I do not think that we as a country are going to go backward in the arena of women's rights. A majority of Americans dislike abortion but they dislike having to take care of unwanted children more. However, I am concerned what would happen if, like in England, this religion takes hold and starts having influence in legislation. Women would have many less rights. I think that the proponents of this way of thinking are very patient.

As a side note I don't think (and I am really to lazy to look it up) that Islam is a big supporter of abortion either.
