News on Houston

For those interested ... my family in Houston is okay. One family was without power for about 24 hours, and the other never lost power. The west side of town must have fared much better than the south, north and east.

Still, the pictures and the stories coming out of this region are saddening and solemn. Some stories are heartening, and the greatness of the human spirit never ceases to amaze me. I almost feel compelled to drive down there and lend a hand. There will be church groups going through battered areas and ripping out carpet, broken windows, and dry wall for the clean up crews to pick up, and to start rebuilding.

Remember a lot of those in the poorer neighborhoods are evacuees from Katrina. If you have anything to send the red cross, now is the time to do it. We should all go donate blood. There will be shortages.

Houston usually has a very funny problem of tow trucks. Every accident, tow trucks line up along the highway waiting to see who will get the gig. It's really quite amazing to see. But anyway, these same tow trucks (and there are A LOT of them) are now driving up and down city streets removing trees with their wenches and just cleaning things up. Nice.

God is with Houston:

In Garden Oaks, Jerry and Martha Kennedy decided not to sleep in their bedroom Friday night, which turned out to be a lifesaving decision because a tree limb crashed through their roof and crushed their bed.

And he will continue to be. Please pray for the whole area during the recovery.
