Harry Reid
Sept 17: "No one knows what to do."
Sept 23: "I got some good news in the last hour or so … it appears that Sen. McCain is going to come out for this." (or,Reid, who had challenged McCain to take a position on the bill)
Sept 24: "Would not be helpful ... to have them come back during these negotiations."
Sept 26: Reid:
Thank you to the state of Nevada, for keeping this wonderful representative of the people's views in office.
Another quote:
And today, we hear Democrats all over the place saying that McCain sat around and did nothing to help the process and it's all a great big stunt. Meanwhile, the other side is saying that he's worked throughout the night with House Republicans to get a deal going that they like.
On top of that, the rumor mill circulating on talk radio is that the reason that the deal emploded in the White House meeting is because President Bush turned over the meeting to Reid and Pelosi, who differed to Obama (as he is the party head at this time). Somehow in this meeting, Obama ticked off House Republicans by not supporting their stipulations. Line coming out of radio ... Obama was meant to appear stately and he cost the compromise. And the reason McCain was needed in Washington, was because of his level of experience negotating between the aisles.
Whatever.
So Harry Reid last week had no clue what to do, but now, just 9 days later, if we don't pass this massive bailout the world will fall apart. I'm not buying it. I don't know about you, but I don't think he suddenly became brilliant in the last nine days.
OH JOY! A bit of bright news. Harry Reid's $56B stimulus package with the oil shale ban didn't break cloture. Thank heavens!

"But what I'm saying is it's very unpopular. And just because something at first glance seems unpopular doesn't mean we shouldn't react to it. And we're going to do our very best we can. But is this pleasant work? No, it's not pleasant work. Look what's happening to the calls coming into our offices and our e-mails. People are very unhappy with what we're doing. But we believe we have an obligation to the country and that is Wall Street and Main Street.

Late this afternoon, Reid said that McCain's presence, "would not be helpful." But just yesterday, a nervous Sen. Reid reportedly told the White House that securing McCain's support for the eventual bailout package would be crucial to completion of the bill.
