A Few of My Favorite Things

Happy Birthday United States of America! Last night we went out to dinner with good friends of ours and The Colony was having their fireworks show. Which we could see from the parking lot. We stood in the parking lot singing patriotic songs. Which I sort of (apparently) have a reputation for doing anyway. Good times.

This morning in the odd way that is my habit, I woke up at 6:30. During the week, I struggle to get out of bed at 7:00. But on days when I have nothing going on, I bounce out of bed like a flying fish out of water. Strange.

But ... the best things were and are on tv! Earlier ... the best movie ever made ... The Sandlot. It's such a wonderful piece of Americana. I hope when we have a family I have lots of boys. And I hope (against hope, hope, hope) that they love baseball. Which, with their father, it would be difficult for them not to.

But so many things I say or used to say come from The Sandlot. "You're killing me Smalls!" I love that movie. It's so good. It should be watched every day. And it's perfect for the 4th of July (also one of my favorite things.)

The second show, which is currently on, is Little Women. The updated version. I love this movie. I, and I'm sure many, many others, completely and always thought I was Jo. Shouting through the house, dramatic and overreactive, just a bit awkward, hair that I didn't care about, and clothes that didn't fit in with what everyone else wore.

And, being blessed with a sister (Ha!) I understand and relate to the relationships, the jealousy, the anger. When Amy throws Jo's "manuscript" into the fire, and Jo reacts by lunging at her and shouting ... yeah that's me. And Jo opines "I don't think I'll ever be good and kind, I fear I crave violence." After she cuts her hair ... and Bet asks her, as she's crying in the dark, if she's thinking about her injured father ... Jo cries, "My hair." I cut my hair for a good cause a year ago, and I was never sorry I did it.

But I did cry over my hair. But my vanity was part of the reason I did it.

Sigh. The world is a better place for ladies now because of people like Louisa May Alcott. I'll need to add some girls to my baseball roster.

Happy Independence Day! God Bless and keep the United States of America!
