No time for full post ... but Congressman Murtha owns the Marines and all military men and women an apology. A loud one. Another Marine involved in the Haditha incident had all charges against him dropped today.
Second, Obama was on television saying we should go back to prosecuting terrorism in our courts, as we did after the 93 bombing at the World Trade Center.
Only issue with that? Well in order to do that, you have to wait for the act of terrorism to occur. And how precisely would we have prosecuted those who flew the planes on Sept. 11, 2001? You can not prosecute the dead. And if we are only re-acting to their acts of terrorism, we are doing nothing to protect ourselves from another 9/11.
Driving through Houston and back through downtown Dallas these past two weekends, I was looking up at a lot of sky scrapers. I haven't thought about 9/11 in any real sense in a long time. But looking up at those skyscrapers, again I was aware of how vulnerable we are. Of how awful it was to watch the World Trade Center fall out of the New York sky.
My nieces and nephews don't know about 9/11. They were all born in the years after. In their history books they will be told about it ... but will they show the pictures? The people running down the street covered in white dust of smashed lives and work?
I was just thinking how much falls to us, those that lived it, to share and explain. Where were we when ... and we'll be a generation of mothers and fathers whos view of the world was dramatically and irrevocably changed in one day. Like those that survived the Great Depression, who still have canning cabinets in their basement, and glass jars with ready lids - just in case. And those that survived Pearl Harbour, WWII, Civil Rights, Vietnam ... So much falls to the survivors to share, so that the next generation can learn from what we learned.
I was thinking about how those that lived through the Depression ... their generation is getting smaller and smaller. It makes me very sad. It will be on me to share the stories from my grandparents with my children.
Not enough time ... just babbling I guess.
