Handful

1st - Senator Reid brought his Carter Windfall Profit Tax (Consumer First Energy Tax of 2008 - clever title no?) to the floor for a cloture vote so it could be debated, and it died a miserable death.

Just so we all know where I stand on this - and I'm sure you're all going crazy wondering - if you tax the oil companies, they will pass that tax on to us. Thereby raising gas prices. Our Senators know this, so what they are doing is pandering to the lowest common denominator, the idiots among us who hear they are trying to stop the rising gas prices by voting on meaningless legislation that doesn't have a prayer of passing.

What really makes me sick, is that 51 of our illustrious Senators voting in favor of cloture, bringing it to the floor. Read the article at the link from the Heritage foundation on why it'll just raise prices and it's just stupid, stupid, stupid.

2nd - Senator Obama's search committee for his VP slot. Two of the people on that search committee have made money off CountryWide, a mortgage company that sells yucky mortgages to people who should, but don't, no better. More background on this HERE (Politico). The guy in question is Jim Johnson, and he worked for Fannie Mae and others. He's in trouble because of a deal with Countrywide that earned him $7M. (Snippet from WSJ)
On Saturday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Johnson received at least $7 million worth of home loans from Countrywide through an informal program for friends of company CEO Angelo Mozilo that offered rates below the market average. At least four of the loans were issued while Johnson was employed either as the CEO or an outside consultant for Fannie Mae.
ABC News Blog (at the link) reports that when asked for comment on that issue, he says he's not vetting his search committee as regards their mortgages. Reporter than asks "shouldn't you?" To which he responds no. He then goes on to try and say that these people on this search committee are performing a certain task and don't really work for him.

For the love of Pete. And his ums and uhs and ums and uhs are right up there with George Bush and his failure at the English language. Without a teleprompter, the guy ain't all that.

But who is.

3rd - I swear Drudge is for Obama. Read this headline: McCain wants low corporate taxes, regulated CEO pay...

Okay "regulated" unless it is in regards to safety and health is a bad word in my book. Typically. In regards to corporations and salaries, I'd say it's a definite bad word. But the title here is completely misleading. McCain doesn't call for regulation of CEO pay, he says that CEO salaries should be approved by their boards of directors. Which typically, they are. It just so happens that said CEO is usually on that board. Or at least very close to it. He did say he'd have federal prosecutors investigate ... so maybe it's a fair quote.

As regards taxing in general though - McCain is going to raise taxes less than Obama. And he'd have us less regulated than Obama. But really, that's like comparing how red a tomato is. This one is really red, this one is just sort of red.

I thought the tomato analogy timely. I'm starting to miss those little guys! :)
