The Miley Picture in Vanity Fair
For those of you who don't pay attention to the Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus scene (which I assume is most of you) you don't know that Annie Leibovitz (the chick that took pictures of Suri Cruise when she was an infant, not to mention 100s of other celebs) took a provocative picture of Miley with a sheet wrapped around herself looking disheveled.
Disney (where Hannah Montana airs and who pays Miley's salary) is all sorts of upset, and has banned her from showing up at a couple of events.
Cyrus's parents are now crying foul saying that they weren't told they were going to be llike that and boo-hoo Miley was tricked. For it's part, VF has candid pictures of the shoot on it's website, which clearly show her dad there participating and obviously allowing events to continue.
They also have an article up (also includes the picture). The picture on the first page is of Miley lying across her Dad's lap. And um ... well I love my Dad, we have a great relationship. He raised me well.
I never, ever, ever would have posed for a picture like that. Ever.
In the article Miley says that Sex and the City is her favorite show. She is 15. At 15 I still had a bed time of 8:30PM and I wasn't allowed to watch 90210. Which was on a national TV channel. SitC is on HBO. With full nudity, cussing, raunchiness. Not really fit for a 15 year old.
That right there is a sign to me that not only do her parents have no control over her at all, but also that she is probably not the great role model all these parents think she is. At least, not the real her. The show is still family fun. If you can keep her kids from idolizing the "real" actress and leave them to adore Hannah Montana, maybe you can make your way through it.
I have no children but I can tell you right now; I saw my first episode of SitC in college. My parents followed the rating system and I'll do my best to do the same. Pg-13 at 13, R at 18. Thems the breaks kids.
I'm more upset about that than I am the picture. The picture is provacative but she's fully clothed and it is art. And if I think about it ... I don't like the picture of her laying across her dad's lap. Gives me the willies.
