The Daughter of Alice Walker
Alice Walker is an accomplished author (The Color Purple) and a "womanist," a term she prefers to feminist. Oddly, Alice Walker married and had a child, Rebecca, but 8 years later divorced.
Her daughter Rebecca, has written a new book; Baby Love: Choosing Motherhood After a Lifetime of Ambivalence. An excerpt was printed in the DailyMail, and it's very good. (Found this at Michelle Malkin, BTW).
I don't think it's all that unusual that Alice (according to her daughter) thinks that children and motherhood are a form of slavery. Nor do I think it's unusual that her daughter thinks family and children are the most important thing in life.
What I do find interesting, is that they are so closely related.
It would be difficult (from where I sit) to go in such an opposite direction from ones family. But I guess Alice doesn't value family overmuch, so it's not really that big of an issue. I can not imagine being estranged from a child. What would be the point? You only get so much time here on earth. It seems silly to not communicate with your children and grandchildren. Same for parents. You only get so much time ... why would you not spend time with your parents?
Anywho - I found some of her points about feminism tricking women out of children poignant and true. My generation is not having children. Our population is shrinking to the point where we won't be able to take care of our parents. There will not be enough money. I have a friend who married over the weekend. She is in her mid-thirties and concentrated on her career and traveling before "settling down". They will be trying for children right away. I wish them luck. Feminism has tricked us all into thinking getting pregnant is as easy as striking a match.
I find it interesting that Rebecca here is writing about her mom. She's a writer too, like her mom ... but no matter how much she disagrees or dislikes her mothers choices ... she's still writing about her. I dunno ... seems a little opportunistic to me. Maybe as if we know that her book may not sell if it's about something else ... but if you attach Alice Walker's name to it ...
