Your Opinion is Noted.

Dana Tuszke writes for Blog Her. She is entitled to her own opinion.

I think she's an idiot. And as I'm entitled to my opinion, I am priviledged to say that.

Today, she writes that President Bush has halted the troop withdrawal from Iraq at the recommendation of General Petreaus. The General is a highly decorated, extremely intelligent man. His opinion is one that not only President Bush should listen to, but so should Miss Tuszke.

As an officer in the military, Gen. Petreaus knows exactly what is at stake. And he is not without feeling. He knows the families involved, intimately, and knows much more about the conflict we are in than, I would say, most.

But apparently, he's not as smart of Ms. Tuszke.

Her sister is in the National Guard and her unit has been called to serve. In 2009. Her brother serves as well. I think that's great. They probably both got great educations that they wouldn't get elsewhere. Her brother has returned home, safely, from a 17 month deployment to Kuwait.

I wonder sometimes how my life would have been different had I done as I'd planned and joined. It was a post 9/11 world and I was ready to go. But advice from those around me about my degree and um ... achem ... physical ability, steered me another way. I'm often ashamed of myself, for not having joined. I think serving would have provided a better purpose to my life now, which I think sometimes is riddled with "quick sucessions of busy nothings." But I have to think my contribution lies elsewhere. That my purpose has not yet been revealed to me.

Anyway. I note Ms. Tuske's opinion. I even appreciate it as the family member of a soldier who has fears and concerns. But the soldiers that are over there, the vast majority miss their families terribly, love their country dearly, and believe that they are doing good.

So they are not, as she intimates, fighting for nothing. And I would point out, that regardless of whether or not Congress cuts funding and troops come home, there will be, as there has been for the past nearly 20 years, be deployments to Iraq and Saudi Arabia. There will be deployments to Turkey, Guam, Germany, North Korea, Somalia, Kosovo, etc. And the soldiers will be just as dearly missed by their family members then, even if MSM reporters forget that they are there.

Before you call me an idiot, I think you should take a step back and understand that the war in Iraq is very complex. How can you fault me from wanting our troops to come home? And how can you insult me when you yourself admit you haven't been off to war?

Seems like the term idiot need not be thrown around so quickly.

I think it idiotic as a layman to disregard the opinion of a highly decorated general so immediately.

You assume that risks are being taken with military lives for nothing.

And while yes, I did not serve, I gave my childhood to this country, and having lived the military lifestyle from that perspective, I feel perfectly entitled to insult your opinion on this matter.

I should have added a caveat to my statement. Overall I bet you are not an idiot, I bet you are very wise on other things. It is your opinion in the article noted that I think is idiotic.

As I believe the country is still free (thanks to your relatives and mine) I can say that.
