Men From Polygamy Sect Speak.
They claim that many don't know that it is illegal to marry someone under the age of 18. They go on to say that they don't think their children are abused. Well no, I bet they don't think they are. Because they are brought up to believe that it is normal for an elder man to marry a much, much younger girl.
It's a horrible, horrible situation. Because you have these people that have purposefully cut themselves off from the rest of society, so that they can live the way they choose. The elders / leaders deliberately do not let them have contact with the outside world and they are hopelessly uneducated on our laws, customs, etc. They are told that a child that is 13 is ready for marriage and child rearing, and when Texas rangers come in and tell them that is most definitely not the case, they act bewildered.
But there is someone that knows enough about the governments laws and rules. Jeffs owns (or did own) all the property in Utah, Arizona and I'd imagine in Texas. The land in Utah and Arizona was taken over by the state when he was imprisoned. It's estimated it's worth $100 million. He was somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 wives.
The YZR itself is worth something like $21M (Houston Chron) they are "one of the county's biggest tax payers." And The Chron also reports that they have million dollar defense contracts, making aircraft parts. And that the trust owns other compounds in South Dakota and Canada.
The men in these compounds work with those on the outside. They work in office buildings. And yet their wives, who are not recognized as wives by the state, have multiple children so that they can bring in large checks from welfare programs. They buy food with food stamps, healthcare with Medicaid, and get regular checks for being single mothers.
I also think that the interviews and the people speaking out are not coincidental. They are saying what they have been told to say in order to help their case. I do not believe for one second that people so savvy in business are such dunces in marital law.
This is such a mess. 416 kids (and some of those pregnant with more children) set to fall into the foster care system, and parents who would put them back into the cult as soon as they could.
Really the only thing to do is pray for them.
