Why are they so stupid?

I started working at Liberty Mutual on January 22, 2004. In October of that year, Elliott Spitzer (then Attorney General of New York) charged Marsh Insurance Brokers (one of our company's biggest partners) with fraud. They were accused of bid-rigging, price-fixing and accepting payoffs from insurers. Insurers like Liberty Mutual.

So ... I heard the name Elliott Spitzer a lot.

Today, when I heard that the Metro desk at NYT broke a story that Spitzer had been linked with a prostitution ring in Washington ... I was shocked. Spitzer was someone that seemed to hate improprity. At least in big business, it seems. Perhaps not so much on an individual level.

My bigger question, is why are these men so stupid? Politics (and probably the larger world but my for today's purposes - politics) is full of stupid, stupid men. What on earth is so hard about remaining loyal to one woman? What is so hard about not having affairs?

And why - why oh why - do they think they can get away with it? People always - ALWAYS - find out. Wives always - ALWAYS - find out. Maybe not that day, that year or month, but they will always find out. And in the end the results are just disasterous.

Check out the picture on the cover of NYT.com. At least it is at 10.21PM. Spitzer and his wife walking off stage. You know that reporters were just itching for a picture of the shamed wife.

Why do men do these things to women that they profess to love? She has to stand up there next to him. Why? Well a few options ... she already knew and it's a loveless marriage and she's playing a part. Or ... she loves her husband, loves her marriage, considers it a vow. And her vow precludes her from leaving without a fight.

Check out the video here at the lower right. Is it just me or does that kid love this just a little too much?

Spitzer will lose his job. By rights he should. The Governor of New Jersey had to resign. Senator Craig said he was going to resign, then didn't, then tried to take back his guilty plea ... so it would seem that we expect men who do these things to quit.

The Crusador, as dubbed by Time Magazine ... is now the philanderer, adulterer, and solicitor. Elliott Ness, for his strong will to crush corruption wherever he found it ... well he won't be called that anymore. Apparently, the one place he didn't mind corruption was within himself.

And I listened to his 60 second apology with a woman by his side who looked like she was thinking ... "when I got married, I never thought I'd be standing here. When I had our children, I never thought I would have to endure this. I can not believe I'm standing here, enduring this." And when she looks up into the eyes of the press, she sees malice, blood lust and probably worst of all ... sad sickened pity. Women looking at her and shaking their heads going "poor thing, bless her heart."

As we all know here in the south ... Bless Your Heart is tantamount to pointing a finger and shouting ... "Look at that dumbie!"

Okay okay so she is in New York and they would no sooner say Bless Your Heart as they would say Missour-UH or Our-Kansas. But it's true none the less. He didn't just break his families trust, he destroyed their name and quite publically made a fool out of them all. And not only them. The legions of people that voted for him in his "land slide election" in 2006 are all just as slack jawed and embarrassed. He rode to the Governor's mansion on talk of cleaning house and routing out corruption. It's just so sad.
