American Idol

Okay this season rocks. So many, many good people. Last season we had to deal with the hair boy who's name I thankfully can not remember.

Today's episode we get to the top 12. The theme was the Lennon & McCartney song book.

Part of the brilliance was just the songs. They are soooooo good.

Michael sang "Across the Universe," by far, my very favorite, favorite, favorite song written by the genius that is John Lennon. It was fantastic. Randy and Simon said it was boring, but I loved it.

Fiona Apple covered this song for the movie Pleasantville. She is brilliant, and it's just a great song.

Anyway ... I've watched the past 3 seasons or so of Idol, on and off. This season is really good. There are 5 contestants (of the remaining 12) that are just ROCK STARS. Chikezie (sp?), David Cook, Carly (Irish girl), Brooke (piano girl - AWESOME!), Jason Castro (okay this is more than 5?), and I haven't seen David Archuleta yet (he's last and next) but I'm sure he's fantastic. H's the 17 year old that everyone is raving about.

The craziest thing ... several of the contestants had never even listened to the Beattles. I am officially old. And well my parents are ancient.

OH MY GOD DAVID ARCHULETA FORGOT THE WORDS!

Okay there are 5 good contestants. :) I was right the first time. Carly rocked the house. I predict, if she keeps that up she's our winner. She sang Come Together, which ya know, is a crowd pleaser anyway, but it just rocked. She's the winner.

But Jason Castro (from Rockwall, TX!) will have a recording career too. Easily. And I'd like to see Brooke (piano girl) sing Fiona or Tori. I'd just like to see that. Once. On American Idol. She'd probably butcher it. But ... I'd like to see it anyway.

I just want to say again, part of the brilliance of tonight was the songs. John Lennon was a prolific song writer. He was quite possibly the single most brilliant song writer ever. His songs transcend time and generation, and this show proved that. These kids were able to sing these songs in a meaningful way that still connects. Brilliant. John Lennon was brilliant.

My dad said something to me once when talking about John Lennon. And I've already said it here. I believe we were driving some place. He was driving, I was about 12 or 13. And he was talking about John Lennon. "John Lennon was a prolific writer," he said. I didn't know what prolific meant so he told me. I don't remember the definition he told me. But I remember thinking ... I want that. I want someone to say "Stacy was a prolific writer."

:)

Flash forward (good gracious) 15 years (oh please say it ain't so!) and the dream is still there ... but I'm much more realistic. The words applied to describe John Lennon will never be used to describe me. But I was 12! And it was just one of those moments were you got caught up in dreaming about what your life will be like. And whenever I hear "Across the Universe" I think of the word prolific, and being a 12 year old girl wanting to someday be like that.

It's funny the things you remember from your childhood isn't it? I have a few key memories that I think of from time to time.

1 - is the prolific thing, described above.

2 - is in Cocoa Beach, FL, sitting across the water from the space shuttle that was supposed to take off, my Dad says to one of his friends that he see (me standing beside him) that "some day she'll hate her old man for moving her around the country.) And me (I was 9) thinking that would never happen in a million years. And every time I started to think bad thoughts (specifically my senior year) I remembered that conversation, and it took me back to center. Didn't stop me from giving mom a hard time though. Sorry mom!

3 - I was 7, in the car with mom, we had had a babysitter the night before and mom and dad had gone to see a movie. "What movie did you see?" Mom - "Pretty Woman." What was it about? Oh yeah ... this gets good. My mom wasn't big on lying. "A prostitute that falls in love ..." or something. I only remember she said the word prostitute. What's a prostitute. My mom than says ... A call girl. Yeah mom ... I'm 7. I'm going to know what a call girl is?

This goes on for a few more seconds while mom squirms at the idea of having to talk to her 7 year old about sex. Then she tells me it's a woman who has sex for money.

I've had that memory for a very long time. It's a favorite.

Anywhoo ... I rambled this evening. But Lewis is out at dinner, I'm not feeling 100% and American Idol is over. And who knows ... you don't get to be a prolific writer without spitting something out every now and then.

Words are flying out like
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me

Nothing's going to change my world
Nothing's going to change my world

Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
that call me on and on across the universe
thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe ...
The Beatles, Across the Universe
