Primary Talk
Romney announced the suspension of his campaign today at CPAC. I'm not surprised. With Huckabee staying in for spite (or to help McCain, depending on which conspiracy theorist you side with) there was no chance with them splitting the delegates.
McCain is speaking at CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference - an annual meeting for grass roots) shortly, and they are having to tell people not to boo. Someone somewhere is voting for this man in the primary, but they are not the heart of the party. Anytime you have to tell your own party not to boo ... well things aren't looking so good.
I once, 4 years ago, posed this question to my parents: if it was Hillary v. McCain, who would you vote for? Their answer is what we're facing now. And many of the party are opting to sit this one out.
Sadly, this is not an option. I have a "use it or lose it" mentality. And if you don't vote, well you're asking them to take that right away. The best thing about this primary season is record numbers of people are turning out to vote. People are being turned away because they don't have enough ballets. That is awesome. And that is democracy in action. Younger voters, the coveted 18-35, are coming out to vote in numbers never before seen, thanks in large part to the internet.
But beyond all that, sitting this one out means you don't vote for other things too. Like Senators, Congressman and local leaders. JUDGES. All important judges. So sitting this out isn't an option.
But I may use the right in slot. I don't think I can stomach voting for health care entitlement and I don't think my pen will leave ink next to John McCain.
But you have to ask yourself this too ... with Israel saying they believe Iran will have nuclear weapons within 4 years ... what do you do with this next presidency? I don't think McCain is as strong on security as others say. If he were he'd be for closing the border and ending the flood of people that freely cross there. So I'm not convinced that he would acknowledge Iran as a threat.
Can you live with a nuclear Iran? Can any of us? I don't know. The Democrats believe we can. Obama has said he would "talk" with Ahmadinjhad. If that's not a concern for you and you think I'm silly for worrying about it, so be it. I just wonder.
There is no conservative in this race who cares about anything that I care about. And Democrats will raise taxes and broaden entitlement programs and lead us into bankruptcy or astronomical inflation (with help from Republicans in Congress, no doubt). The only hope to ebb the pork was a nominee who would veto their outrageous spending habits. But now that small hope is gone. Neither Huckabee or McCain will limit spending or fix entitlements.
But I like democracy in action. It's an awesome thing. It makes me miss D.C. and the brief time I saw all this from a different perspective. It was the lead in to an election year too ... sigh.
Goodbye Romney. Hello McCain - Huckabee v. we don't know yet.
You can't tell me that's not awesome too. For the first time in decades we don't have a clear Democrat front runner. For the first time, states that usually don't matter ... oh yeah baby ... they matter! I love it.
