The Assassination of Benzair Bhutto
This is a tragedy. A horrible, horrible murder that I don't know what the reprocussions will be. My first question was ... "What does this mean?"
And no one really knows at the moment.
In the beginning, they said she was shot. Now, the government has whirled up a new line. She died from a skull fracture when her head hit the sun roof.
Huh?
Maybe so. But no autopsy was done, last I read. And she was buried last night (our time). So who knows what that means. An article at Telegraph UK says that she was hit by two bullets, one in the abdomen and one in the head. They are calling it a security lapse. Which is exactly what MSN told me today that the government was saying didn't happen. That this was not their fault.
So they position it that the woman was trying to protect herself, and she ended up killing herself, but hitting her head on the "lever of the sunroof."
And now they say they intercepted a phone call from Al Qaeda that claims responsibility of the attack.
So the boogeymen did it. Isn't that convienent. Until I hear the tape my verdict is out.
This is a horribly sad day for women in that region. Bhutta had only just come back to Pakistan 2 months ago after a self imposed exhile. She must have known her life was in danger. She must have known that she, as a woman, was heavily opposed by the patriarchal society that surrounded her. Is that the right word? Patriarchal? Only men can lead?
She was buried so quickly ... it was almost like they didn't want to give anyone else a chance to examine her. One day? Is that normal? Most of our heads of state, the ones that die naturally, hang around the capital for like a week. This woman was buried within 36 hours of her death. Is that normal?
The great thing about today and technology, everyone with a samsung cell phone has a video camera at their disposal. And just like we saw the horrible death of Saddam Hussein, we will see the video of the attack on Bhutto.
It's just so sad ... she was such a great hope for the people of Pakistan. She was a promise of democracy for them in an increasingly militarized state.
We will all have to watch and see.
