Just wanted to say ...

That I saw Momento for the first time this weekend.

I didn't like it.

For those that don't know, this movie came out in 2000, stars Guy Pearce (Count of Monte Cristo) and Carrie-Ann Moss (The Matrix) and is best known for it's editing. The movie starts at the end and ends at the beginning.

Why? Because the main character has no short term memory, and the viewer is meant to be as confused as he lives his life; to see the world as he sees it. In short sequences that don't make a lot of sense.
So his wife is brutally attacked and he sets out to find the "2nd attacker" and kill him. In the end ... the only monster I see in the movie is the lead, Leonard.
I don't think I'm alone in my movie watching patterns. I like happy movies with nice, neat endings, with heros and heroines, and princesses and people you can root for and believe in.
There is enough about real life that doesn't make sense or hurts or is painful or sad. Why would I spend 2 hours of my life watching fiction that emotes all those feelings? Maybe I'm too empathetic. Maybe I get too wrapped up in it. Either way ... I know so many people loved the above movie. I've seen it on several "favorite" lists. Maybe because of the unique editing style. Maybe because that was so different, maybe that's why they like it.
Maybe. At the end I was left feeling as if a monster was still on the loose.

I didn't like that movie either. But I don't know about your neat endings theory--I watched "Ladder 49" for the first time tonight, and cried like a baby when the lead character died. Throughout the whole thing, I really thought his friends were going to be able to save him....

Not one of my favorite movies either - distrubing - different but distrubing. Good and bad all mixed up - makes the movie difficult to become involved in. I walked out of the theater wondering why I went to see that movie.
