Now Bring Back Willie T!
The Houston Astros fired general manager Tim Purpura and manager Phil Garner this afternoon. I'm shocked! Well, not that Purpura got canned. At Biggio's celebration two weeks ago the crowd erupted in boo's when he was introduced. It was only a matter of time before owner Drayton McLane (who was at that celebration and who did NOT get boo'd) did something.
The Astros are not having a great season. I think it's the curse of Willie T. They trade Willie T. to the Rockies for Jason Jennings (a pitcher). Jennings is medicore at best and Willie T. was a rock star. Watching him last fall was awesome. And they traded him? Wheels? Really?
So the Astros are giving up on the rest of this season (they are something like 10 games off the lead) and looking to next year. I'm sorry to see Phil Garner go, sort of. I liked him. But maybe the change will do them good, and another manager with another outlook will bring a World Series back to Minute Maid park.
