Great Movie / Stupid Show

Just two short things than I'm off.

Becoming Jane was a fabulous movie. I really enjoyed it. I don't know how truthful it was and only a small part of me cares. Ann Hathaway was really, really good as Jane and I loved James McAvoy as Tom. It was just delicious.

Next thing ... Army Wives. I've avoided it like the plague because I knew it would be absolute garbage and I would hate it. As a person that grew up on military bases, in military schools and who knows a few acronyms like PCS, TDY, OTS, Farewell's, and O clubs, I feel like an expert of sorts on the subject. I should probably submit my resume to write for the show. I'd do a better job.

As I feared, it's garbage. I watched ten minutes of it where a woman wanted to go back to work and her husband (insert typical, shaved-head middle-aged white military man here) threw a fit because she wouldn't be able to attend a farewell. "I need you there. I need you to support me. To help my career." That's not a direct quote or anything, but it was garbage. Real typical military man, short, curt ... I sat there going "why are they married?" They didn't act like they liked each other at all.

And the part that made me laugh ... she asked him how his trip to Washington went and he said ... "Really well. Things look good. Lots of good things. Maybe even a desk at the Pentagon."

Oh my gosh ... the dreaded desk at the Pentagon. The rat race. Dime a dozen Colonels.

Another funny part. An LTC returns from somewhere and her Col asks her if she wants to return to duty. First of all, the woman was wearing a dress while her superior was in fatigues. Wierd. Then a General came in and asked her if she wanted to return to her post. Also wierd.

In my experience with the military, it goes like this:

Superior Officer: "So what you do want?"
Individual: "I want this, this and this."
SO: "Okay, you're not getting any of that. You're doing this."

I just thought it was funny they were giving her a choice. As the brat I have limited point of view, but as it was explained to me it was more like a telling bit. That's why they are called "orders."

The only true part was the skin-head husband said his superior officer said it was time to start making connections and playing the game. Now that part I believe.

The rest of it ... well it's not what I know to be true of the military. The women are whiney and the President of the Wives club (which it's now called the Spouses Club) is an elitist witch who puts down the enlisted wives.

It's just not what I know to be true. I'd ask my mom what the word is around their about it ... I'd be curious to know what the real wives think of it. So if you like it ... maybe I watched a bad episode. Or part of a bad episode. But the great thing about TV is ... I can turn it off!

Slate did an article on this the other day (See it here: http://www.slate.com/id/2171615/fr/flyout) in which they say it's pretty much fiction. There are a lot of links to other good articles at the end too.

I don't really care if it's fiction or not, I'm looking forward to seeing it--doesn't open here until next weekend though!
