Live Earth

I blogged once about Live 8 two years ago, about how celebrity types with their thousands of dollars in door prizes get on stage and start preaching to us little people about how we little people should change our lives and give more of our money to the needy / starving / displaced / in any other way needy.

This years Live Earth concert was even more revolting. I can get behind helping and saving the children of Africa. I don't think a benefit concert is the way to go, as I still don't believe throwing money at a corrupt government is going to help the poor people of that nation.

But this whole thing takes the cake for ridiculous celebrity stunts.

They come in droves, with their mega-watt amps. With their entourages, with their private jets, with their peligrino and their Fendi and their Prada. With their $120 tickets for the lawn, with their 5,000 square foot mansion in Malibu and their 2,000 square foot "bungalows" on the Mediterranean.

These people - these uber rich - are telling you and me, Joe Smoe American - to turn off the water while we brush our teeth and to turn the street lamp off after dark.

Do we really think that this is appropriate? More do as I say, not as I do.

And Al Gore -- lose some weight and get back to issues that are going to have a real impact and not just line your pockets. He's made over $100M in the last seven years promoting this issue. This religion. This theory that they are presenting as fact.

It's a theory. Not even a well thought out one. And they leave no room for dissenting opinion. Do I think that the world is changing? Yes. I had never read in any history book or earth science book that the earth's temperature was static. In fact, I read the opposite, that it's dynamic in that it's been through ice ages.

It's crap.

The good thing is that as far as benefits go, even the media is seeing the hypocrisy of Kelly Clarkson getting on stage and in response to the question "What should people do at home to make a difference?" saying she recycles and carpools.

Really? How many cars does it take to get your entourage to the stage on time? It's just bogus.

There was some other guy that said, "You know how when we leave town we turn the lights on outside so it looks like somebody is home? I think we could cut that out. It would help."

Oh my land, I wanted to throw something at the TV. Cancelling the Live Earth concert would have saved more carbon credits then me and my closest American friends - all 300 million of us - could have come close to wasting with our 40 watt light bulbs on our front porches.

Stupidity is breeding and it's getting uglier and uglier.

Can we not see that this is propaganda at it's basest form? People don't understand the changing weather, and rather than take a reasonable approach to researching and investigating the problem, they throw multi-million dollar concerts just to tell people to use less toilet paper. Does no one else see the idiocy in this?

Then there's this genius over at Huff Po, Carl Pope:
The big criticism of Saturday's incredible series of concerts to stop global
warming, Live Earth, was that, well, they were concerts. The idea was to listen to music and have a good time. And people burn fossil fuels getting to concerts, and performers sometimes travel very long distances to get there. But I'm pretty sure that the billions who watched from home would probably have burned more fossil fuel on shopping trips they didn't take Saturday than all the performers put together used getting to their venues.

I got a news flash for you buddy - not that many people watched it on TV. He goes on to talk about how the stars were there to deliver an audience, they were "not enlisted as role models." No? Then why ask every performer on stage what he thought the audience could do to go "green?" Or why ask what he himself did to help the enviornment?

You're asking him because you want people to eminate him. You want people to follow his lead. Kind of like a role model. So, so, so, so insulting. How stupid does this guy think we are?

Here's another article from Huff Po from Glenn Hurowitz. He says the enviornmental movement was missing from the concert. Substance was missing from the concert. The police sang with teleprompters because they couldn't remember their own lyrics. There was more cussing from performers than a Chris Rock routine. While I am all about concerts and music and jamming ... this is not what this was billed as. Where were the experts? Aren't they supposed to trott out and do a 75 second infomercial on why we need to stop driving Chevy's and buy a Toyota? Especially considering NPR just reported that in a study of which was better for the enviorment comparing the Prius to the Hummer H3 -- guess who won? Nope, not the Prius. And the article linked is from Slate.

I recycle. I keep my plastic bags. I drive a Honda Civic that gets 30 MPG in the city and closer to 40 on the highway. It has 160,000+ miles on it. I don't fly frequently or "unnecessarily." How can I? I'm a middle American who's trying to start a life with her husband. I don't have the money to create a carbon footprint like Al Gore or John Edwards or Madonna have done. My children and myself combined will probably never create the kind of garbage that they've spewed on the enviornment.

When pointing a finger at people blaming others for the enviornment and it's issues ... these people should take a page from an old 80s song.

"I'm talking to the man in the mirror!"
