Welcome to America

So I have a few thoughts on immigration, but I don't have a lot of concrete ideas on what will work and maybe only a vague understanding of what's at stake if we do try and inforce our border.

Today, it appears that McCain-Kennedy, the two Senators sponsoring legislation that will create a guest worker program and some sort of amnesty for families of those that are working in the United States already, is looking like it's going to sail through the Senate, and the White House will sign it into law.

Do you remember months ago, when they were talking about that $1 billion fence that was going to be built along the 700 mile stretch of Mexico? President Bush had that photo-op down in Arizona, saying "look at me protecting the border?" Well very little of it's been built, and the rising suspicious is that it's been stalled in order to let this piece of legislation go through an effectively curttail the fence's usefulness. And cutting it in half. Now only 370 miles of fence will be built. So far as I know, the fence is still going to be built, but not before any number of immigrants try and make their way across the border.

As an aside - the Fort Dix terrorists that were caught recently. I think 4 of them came across into this country illegally from Mexico. Just an aside.

I am not completely sure what this new plan is. Here are the talking points and analysis from a blogger, LoneWacko. I'm still reading. But the Washington Times has this piece. With this quote:
Rep. Jeff Flake, Arizona Republican, said the worker program is critical because it avoids the mistakes of the 1986 amnesty.

"We just dealt with those who were here illegally, and we didn't recognize
that there would be future needs for employment. And so the day that that act was signed into law in 1986, it was out of date, because we needed more workers," said Mr. Flake, who is sponsoring a House companion bill along with Rep. Jim Kolbe, Arizona Republican, and Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez, Illinois Democrat.

Let me get this straight, "we didn't recognize that there would be future needs for employment." What he's really saying here, is that there was never any intention for them to secure the border after the last immigration "reform," and that they were anticipating more people would cross the border, and the "reform" of 1986 didn't deal with future illegal immigrants.

How do I state this ... these people are here illegally. If you were in France, or Germany, or Russia, without the proper papers, they would kick you out if they caught you. They would deport you. As far as I know, the United States is the only stupid head country that thinks we should just let every body come over here willy-nilly style.

Now ... I'm not saying ClOSE THE BORDER! NO MORE! I'm not saying that at all. Just make them go through the proper channels like normal people. If I stole from a grocery store because the line was too long to wait do you think the police or the store manager would care? No, I'd be charged with a crime.

McCain will never see the back of the desk inside the Oval Office. Nor will he sit in the head chair in the House of Representatives. He has effectively decided to thumb his nose at his base (so have the other Senate Republicans) and pass an amnesty plan that allows workers and their families free access to American health care, jobs and social services.

I do hope this accomplishs employers paying real wages to these people. But it may make them less desirable workers if they actually cost a real wage.

Here's the Wa Times story from today. There was an announcement scheduled for this afternoon about the future of this bill. I think the immigration lobbyists are going to be very pleased.

I think McCain is going to miss his nomination to Mitt Romney (me sees Guiliani bowing out before the primaries ... just me and my crystal ball) and that Hillary will take the Nomination, and we see Madame President at the podium in January 2009.

Oh Fred Thooooommmmmmppppson .... woo-hoo! :)

But I'm not convinced Freddie could win it either ... again, me and my Crystal Ball and my own opinions. And what the heck do I know? I just like talking about this stuff.

Yup -- Announcement made - White House Senate Reach Agreement. Wonder what Michelle thinks ...

Anywho ... I'm sure it'll all work out in the end. I don't like crying about spilled milk, especially when there's not much I can do about it right now except vote in November. I hope my children don't have to survive the downfall of our country (I don't think this will bring it on, it didn't in '86) ... but this is part of the process. The differing views arguing it out and coming to a compromise. Who knows, it could be said that it's the best thing that ever happened to us.

Though the bloggers and people I'm reading (not Huff Po yet) don't seem to think so. Could be another Presidential Mistake tacked at President Bush's door. But that ship has sailed already ... the lame duck is lame and all eyes turn to the future.

I wonder what the world will look like with a woman President ...

On the Boats and on the planes,
They're coming to America!
Never looking back again,
They're coming to America!

And I say this honestly and with warm wishes, if you're here to live a dream and take care of your family and make your way ... WELCOME and God Bless.
