Justice? Or Agenda?
Lewis Libby is scheduled to be sentenced next Tuesday. And I'm pretty sure he could end up not passing go and going directly to jail.
Depending on who you read ... this is a good thing.
Gabriel Schoenfeld is a reporter who writes a lot of places. His article today, linked here at CommentaryMagazine, states more of what I've heard before. That it was never determined that Valerie Plame was a covert agent. The Grand Jury was dismissed and no verdict was reached. Libby was the only indictment to come out of that Grand Jury and it was for lying under oath and not for leaking a CIA operative out to the press.
To me, it seems like he had to indict someone, wanted to indict someone (really wanted to indict Karl Rove) and was left with only indicting Libby. Because he could not justify the millions of dollars wasted on the trial if he came out of it with nothing.
So Libby has been made the martyr. Meanwhile, it's been said that Valerie Plame gave three different accounts of how her husband ended up on assignment to Nigeria, all of them under oath, and all of them different. Read the USA Today article chronicling her versions.
And it's also sad ... because the whole thing started because Joe Wilson said Iraq wasn't trying to buy Yellow Cake uranium and his trip to Nigeria proved that. That proved to a be a lie too. Washington Post Editorial.
Lies, lies, lies. There is nothing in Washington that is true anymore. Except this: they all lie.
And now one of the liars is probably going to be taking away from his family. And while he is a liar and may deserve it ... I don't think his children, who love him, do.
