I just wanted to post this ...

Reader's Digest named Jeff May "Man of the Year 2006."

In 2005, a teenager walked into Red Lake Senior High School (Minnesota) with 3 guns and shot and killed 8 people. He walked into the classroom where Jeff May was reading with his fellow sophomore's, and Jeff, armed with only a pencil, rushed him and stabbed him with a pencil. The two struggled and Jeff was shot in the face.

He distracted the gunman from shooting his classmates and teacher long enough, because as the two struggled the police arrived and the shooter killed himself.

This was the worst high school shooting since Columbine, and I really don't remember hearing that much about it. It has been two years and fault of the human condition, I do have a short term memory.

But Jeff May is definitely a hero. He survived, by the way, but suffers from partial paralysis from a stroke he suffered when he was airlifted to Fargo.

Here's a work up from CNN two days after the shooting in 2005. Not a single solitary mention of what Jeff May did. In their defense, I'll say perhaps two days afterwards it wasn't precisely known what had happened. After all, Jeff was in the hospital (a fact they note with "one with a gunshot wound to the head, a second with a gunshot wound to the face").

Information about Jeff was later available, it seems, because he was honored at the NYSE when he rang the opening bell April 8, 2006.
