Obama the Brilliant Weighs In
So via Drudge we learn that Obama told ABC he thinks that Don Imus should be fired. Good for him. I've already briefly told you what I think about what he said ... but let me go further.
If you let certain parts of the free speech public use certain words, other parts of the free speech public are going to use certain words. That's the way it goes. Until we decide as a culture, as a country, as a race of human beings, not to use foul language, there are those that will use foul language. To me, using racist words and making racist remarks is the same as cussing. It's foul, it's ugly and it has no place in polite society. Don Imus revealed himself to be horribly ignorant and ill-mannered in saying what he said. Though I do not feel he did anything illegal.
But the outrage over all of this is stupid. Where is the outrage at all of the horrible lyrics in rap songs? In R rated movies? That's for art?? Well then you have to ask yourself the question ... if Art is imitating Life, and then Life later imitates that Art ... how long are you going to let the cycle continue? Until we decide as a country and as a culture that racial epithets against any race, white, hispanic, black, Chinese, African, Arab, etc they will continue to be used.
You can not flog and beat and persecute one person for saying what hundreds of thousands of others are saying publically every day. HBO should be run out of town on a rail if saying those sorts of things is illegal and wrong. As should Showtime and the other Cable channels.
And Gay people, you should be largely offended, because television shows and radio hosts and internet columnists have been making fun of you for a long time with horrible slurs. Far as I know Dr. Burke is still on Gray's Anatomy. If a Gay man were running for President maybe someone would have called for his firing and been listened to.
It's hypocritical race baiting. And certain people in this country who shall remain nameless are using this as a self promotion. They can associate themselves with this issue because of their race and therefore they are no better than the others of their race that use the same words every day.
And of course you knew a rapper was going to say something ... "Snoop Dog says rappers and Imus are two different things." I'm posting his comments but I think they reveal his own incendiary, ignoranance.
No one deserves to be called that. Every woman is a child of God and no where in the Bible does he refer to any of them (even the prostitues) in such a derogatory manner. Point of reference, P Diddy had his Def Jam Comedy on the other night (I can not control what my husband watches) and the whole thing was cuss words and explicit jokes. At the end, he says, "Keep God First."
I don't think God is all that interested in what his racial, explicit, foul language comics have to say during that 2 hour period.
Do as I say not as I do should not apply to free speech. To quote a movie I quote often:
Both men's words deserve to be protected. You can't protect one and not the other. Do as I say and not as I do should not apply to free speech.

"It's a completely different scenario," said Snoop, barking over the phone fromNot that Snoop's opinion means much or is even that representative of the whole ... but as a listener (not) of rap music ... how am I to know which females he is referring to with his derrogatory language? Is there a disclaimer on there that says, "Oh we only mean these women over here ... the ones that deserve to be called that."
a hotel room in L.A. "[Rappers] are not talking about no collegiate basketball
girls who have made it to the next level in education and sports. We're talking
about ho's that's in the 'hood that ain't doing s***, that's trying to get a
n**** for his money. These are two separate things. First of all, we ain't no
old-ass white men that sit up on MSNBC [the cable network home to Imus] going
hard on black girls. We are rappers that have these songs coming from our minds
and our souls that are relevant to what we feel. I will not let them
mutha-----as say we in the same league as him."

"You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make
your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours." ~ The American President
