HP Theories: Not the Computer Kind
Upon rereading HP 6, a book I admit to have reading only twice ... I have found more clues that lead me to very good theories.
My first question: Why is Snape so mean to Harry ever since, oh, about the 3rd novel? He really does get much meaner as the books wear on. Why? This can't be coincidental.
My theory: Snape, having been branded with the dark mark, was well aware that Lord Voldomort was returning. As a previous cohort (or spy) of Voldomort, he knew that the Dark Lord was the very best at Occlumency and Leglimens (all errors in spelling to be forgiven I hope!). He knew that Harry had a connection to the Dark Lord and that Voldomort would be using that to his advantage. He was afraid that Voldomort would know if he was being nice to Harry. And that anything other than utter contempt would let Voldomort know that Snape was a traitor. And that would therefore ruin Dumbledore's plans.
Okay ... but why does Snape care for Harry. If you remember, the only nice thing Snape has ever done for Harry was save him in the first book (when he fell off the broom during Quiditch). I also recall another moment, I think in the second, when Snape took up for him and Harry was surprised. But I can't be sure.
But why? Lily Evans. Harry's mom. Lily was the only person at Hogwarts that was nice or kind to Snape. And, what brings me to this post, is a line in book 6 that further adds to my theory:

"Excellent, excellent Harry! Good Lord, it's clear you've inherited yourNothing is done on accident, in the world of JKR. Snape and Lily shared a love of potions. And Snape has a crush on Lily. As he sees Lily in Harry every time he looks into his face, Snape has an affection for Harry. This may, or may not be, how Lily's eyes plays into book 7. I believe it's more than that ... but I'm not quite there yet ... but I bet Snape is the one that explains it to us.
mother's talent. She was a dab hand at Potions, Lily was!"
