Regarding what's going on in Texas today ...
Newspapers are loving what Governor Perry said yesterday at the State of the State. The rundown (hattip) is available at Lone Star Times. Pretty much they love that he's talking about selling the lottery in an effort to help higher education and they love his "shift to the center." Apparently the papers in this state think Perry's eyeing a run for a national office in coming years. I doubt you'll see his name in 08 ... but maybe 12?
HPV debate is going nuts. Doctors and the Texas Medical Association are saying (via Houston Chron) it's too early to issue a mandate and that the rising ire of the constituents will have a negative effect on future vaccinations. My favorite quote from the article is from Perry's office: "A spokeswoman for Perry reiterated Tuesday that the governor stands by the order. She said he is listening to the discussion but thinks the vaccine is safe and effective."
Is Rick Perry a Doctor? Last time I checked he was a lowly elected official and hadn't been to the necessary schooling to make the kind of ascertions that a vaccine is "safe and effective." Heck, even the Doctors don't know how effective it is yet.
Read the article, it's pretty good as far as Houston Chron's go. The best point is that this mandate appears to be shoving a new vaccine down the publics throat without proper education. A lot of people don't know about the virus or it's causes, and perhaps with the proper introduction to the vaccine, could make the decision to administer it to their child. Oh, and the quickest a vaccine has ever gone from approved to mandated in Texas is 5 1/2 years, and that was Chicken Pox. This mandate comes 1 1/2 after the FDA approval, and goes into effective 3 years after is approval. Maybe the time between now and September 2008 will give the public time to understand the move Perry made, but I doubt it.
I'm not finding a firm reason to mandate this vaccine, outside of wanting to eventually wipe out the virus, which of course is the aim. But before you can tell people they're daughters have to have this ... you need to have a campaign explaining why.
But me, I think he created this firestorm so it'd be a firestorm. National coverage for himself and for Texas. And to make money for Merck. Let's not forget about them.

Have you heard about this John Edward's blogger bit? It's so long to get into but the jist of it is that the Edwards campaign hired a blogger, Amanda Marcotte to be his webmaster. Well Amanda has a really bad potty mouth and said terrible things about the Duke LaCrosse players, whom many sane people believe were not guilty and that the crazy lady lied (there's a lot of crazy ladies around here). Evidence of Amanda's bad language and really abrasive tone has been disappearing from her old blogs left and right ... for more info you'd have to visit Michelle Malkin.
An Excerpt for the link challenged:
The real post is littered with 4 letter words and rantings about how contraception is going to be removed from the nation.
Someone's been eating too many fruity pebbles.
But ... with all this web-blogging of Amanda's bad mouth and craziness, the Edward's campaign is talking about canning her. And I guess what drew most people's attention, was her crazy blog on the Duke LaCrosse players, which after people started talking about it, she went back and changed it. Me thinks the crazy lady's trying to hide her craziness to keep her job. This blog has a bunch of quotes from Amanda.
Here's what she said about the Duke players that had most people raising eyebrows. I was going to post it here ... but it's too vile. I have extremely strong feelings on these types of issues. Where women use the word rape when it should not be applied. It ruins lives and nothing is done to protect the men in these situations. And because of women like the woman in the Duke LaCrosse case, a real victim won't step forward for fear of not being taken seriously, for fear of being called a liar. All because of Peter Wolf here.
Anywhoo ... national coverage of the Edwards blog thing is HERE and HERE. Maybe next time, Mr. Edwards ... read some of the postings of the bloggers you hire. Especially if you're going to try and run for President and appeal to all sides.

One last thing ...
I'm sick to death of all this talk about emissions and the public not driving SUV's so we aren't so dependent on foreign oil and meanwhile ... our stupid politicians and celebrity types are asking for jets. Al Gore took a jet to promote an Inconvenient Truth and later an SUV.
Hypocrites.
And how 'bout that crazy lady at NASA???? There's crazy ... then there's crazy.

I’m not going to be “punished” with babies. Which makes all your efforts a failure. Some non-procreating women escaped. So give up now. You’ll never catch all of us. Give up now.
