PETA does what?

I've peripheral heard about this PETA trial, about the two PETA employees that said they would find homes for animals and then later euthanized them in a van and threw the bodies into a shopping center garbage bin.

But I hadn't really followed much of it. But reading today, it seems that PETA's standard practice is to euthanize animals because shelters are over-crowded and inhumane.

Call me crazy, but that doesn't really jive with what I think "ethical treatment of animals" should be.

From a Forbes article two days ago:
Hinkle and Cook were PETA volunteers in Norfolk when they offered to take animals from crowded animal shelters in Bertie, Hertford and Northampton counties. Their lawyer said the load of animals became too large, and the workers began euthanizing the dogs and cats and dumping their bodies in a trash bin at a grocery store.

Ew.

The part that gets me, is that they are maintaining that they didn't do anything wrong, and that they "had paperwork from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that indicated their job that day was to pick up animals from both the shelter and the hospital and that all would be euthanized."

But this was read into court today:

Anderson: "Do you think you can find homes for these animals?"
Hinkle: "Yes. No problem. Absolutely."

And then this... "Anderson testified today that he was so sure Hinkle would take his shelter's animals back to Virginia for adoption that he gave her one of his own pets -- a dog named "Happy" that he and his wife had trouble housebreaking."

Not that I agree with giving up a dog because of housebreaking trouble ... people get pets without so much as a thought as to the work it takes to "raise" them. But I think what these people was crazy wrong. When I think PETA ... I think like Humane Society and people that want to help animals. Not people that want to euthanize animals without even trying to find them homes.

What does all this prove?

Spay and Neuter your pets. And adopt from shelters. There are so many, many, many good dogs who just need someone to come collect them.
