Lunch Roll

It's little wonder to me that the fat cats in Washington don't get anything done. They never WORK. Hattip: Drudge Report. It seems our astute and newly elected leaders are not working the hard days (all five in the week) they promised originally, but are taking today, Monday, off so they can stay at home and watch a football game that aires at 8 est. Yeah, that'd be a hard one to make getting off work at 3. A quote from the article is: "They will have to work five days a week starting in January."

Yeah not so much.

"The 110th Congress convened last week, and despite Democratic insistence on a five-day work week, House leaders agreed to start this week's schedule on Tuesday so lawmakers - particularly those from Ohio and Florida - could attend or participate in BCS national football championship activities." [emphasis mine.]

That quote is about twenty paragraphs down in the story. The top story is about Bush and his plan for Iraq.

Our Congressman are lazy. I wish I could get a day off to go to a football game. Shoot I don't get another day off between now and Memorial Day unless I use a vacation day. But I bet money congress doesn't convene for a full 5 days between now and then. If private businesses ran that way -- shoot, if hill STAFFERS worked that way everything would stop. Congressman are the biggest, laziest, fat cat, pre-madonna's ever. They are there working because we, the people, put them there, and they can't even work a full week? They, and their families, should be expected to live in D.C. for the length of their term. I'm sick to death of this "I need to spend more time with my family" schtick. It's garbage.

Yes, they should be expected to spend time in their districts. It's necessary. But in this day and age, with communication what it is, they should spend one week a month in district, and the remaining weeks in D.C. Or something like that. They should be expected and able to vote on any given day of the week.

Austin might have bird flu. Okay probably not. But a whole bunch of dead birds are being tested and the government closed. Huh, go figure. No wonder this country can't get anything done. The stupid government closes over everything. Side note: Remember that picture of those birds I showed you over at the Family blog? They are called Grackles, evidently, and they are (mostly) what was found dead in Austin.

Yucky birds. They appear when it gets warm down here, same type of thing ... lots of them in a small area. Eww.

And this is just another sign of things to come.

"Starting Monday, patrons of the Dallas-based Pizza PatrĂ³n chain, which caters heavily to Latinos, will be able to purchase American pizzas with Mexican pesos. "

From what I've read, it's a marketing ploy more than anything else. But I don't like the precedence, not one bit.

Oh and if you haven't been following this, you really should be.

The New York Times on April 9, 2006 (9 months ago) ran a story (a pro-choice story) about a young woman in El Salvador who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for having an abortion at 18 weeks. The headline was "Pro-Life Nation," and it was the biggest piece of propaganda garbage ever. It was even used on a Pro-Life website, though it has been taken down. More info via Michelle Malkin, though there are other, less biased articles of the same ilk.

Only thing is, it wasn't an abortion. The woman in question actually carried her baby to term and after the child was born, strangled her. She was then sentenced after a conviction of murder was reached.

So, the Times, runs a faulty story that even their Public Editor knew was bad. Byron Calame (Public Editor) wrote a story about the bad Times reporting on December 31st. Later that week, it was reported that the NYT might be abolishing the Public Editor position and Calame might be out of a job.

9 months later, the Times issues a retraction. 9 months later. It's ridiculous. They didn't do any research at all. They asked one question, got the answer they wanted, and ran with it. And now, nine moths later, after damage is done and everyone that read that article has forgotten about it, they bury a retraction in the bowels of the paper.

They should be ran out of town on a journalistic rail. They are the epitome of everything that is wrong with reporting these days. Why don't I buy a newspaper? Because they are garbage. If a handful of layman can get the necessary papers from a court in El Salvador and the NYT reporters can't ... what does that say about them?

The retraction as it exists at their website. I guess running it on Sunday is better than Saturday ... but really ... 9 months? The only reason they did this was because people finally yelled loud enough. Thank you Calame for being the only voice of reason over at that sorry excuse for a paper. I hope you keep your job.
