LIVID
If this were any other way ... if a man had said this ... if a Republican had said this ...
I am so angry. So, so angry. In a day and age where a woman's right to choose her own destiny is proudly touted by any feminist with lungs and a working vocal cord ... for a Senator to say this to another career woman is a dastardly mark for what lies ahead. I am so mad ... and a letter is coming forthwith. I don't care if she isn't my Senator. This is so, so, so out of line.
The New York Post is the only place reporting it. But thanks to places like Drudge, I expect to see it on Fox News this evening and hopefully other sites and news sources by tomorrow. But its a Friday, and that means no one will hear it.
In the committee meeting where Condi Rice had to defend the Presidents Troop Surge in Iraq, the Junior Senator from California, Barbara Boxer, said this:
This is the most ridiculous piece of trite garbage I have ever heard. It's dramatics at it's very core. An emotional argument made by a woman who clearly does not know the facts.
Secretary Rice's childless, marriageless state is not on trial, and should not have even been mentioned. What was Boxer trying to accomplish? Does she want to point out how many Senator's actually have children / relatives fighting in Iraq or even in the military? Because there are very few. And even if her children were of the appropriate age, there is nothing to say that they would be of service and put at risk, as she puts it.
We have a volunteer military. Simple as that. Whatever the inducements these men and women have for joining, they are there and serve of their own volition. Even signing up for the National Guard is a willing decision.
And frankly, if you don't know anyone in the military, than don't talk about the risk. And don't talk about who pays. Because to you it's all the same, it's just tax dollars. If you don't know someone that's paying the ultimate price by sacrificing their time to serve their country, than you don't understand. You can only say thank you, and do your best to honor them.
And you do not honor the freedom they fight for by criticizing Condi Rice for exorcising her freedom of choice by not having a family of her own. That's a sacrifice perhaps she made to follow a calling of public service. Who knows what her reasons are.
It is most certainly not for Barbara Boxer to judge on any stage, much less a professional one. Shame on you Barbara. And shame on the media for not covering this. Had Bill Frist said this to Hillary, "Well Hill, you aren't paying the price are you because you only have on daughter and no grandkids," they would be slobbering all over it and making him apologize on a public scaffold.
But no, it's a new era. An era of "bi-partisan cooperation." Which means nice, successful, intelligent, women like Condi Rice are mistreated for not what they do professional or politically, but what they do personally.
Shame, shame, shame on you Sen. Boxer. You are not a credit to your sex. And do not use military men and women for your own political maneuvering. They hate that.
P.S. - I just checked Fox News. Headline reads: Boxer's Sucker Punch. Nothing on CNN's front page. Nothing on their politics pages either. Nothing at WaPo. Nothing at yahoo. Another story from CNS ... calls it a giant leap backwards for feminism. Amen. Newsbuster's of course has something ... Look what Diane Sawyer said ...
Back in the studio, Diane Sawyer observed: "I want to go back to congresswoman [sic] Boxer, Jake, for a second and the Secretary of State. And by the way, we saw the Secretary of State's eyebrow just go up when that question came in. I know that congresswoman [sic] Boxer has felt some pressure. Any new word from her on what she meant?" Tapper: "Well, Sen. Boxer's office says all that she meant to say was that Secretary of State Rice, just like Sen. Boxer, does not have any family members in the military. They say she was not trying to draw attention to the Secretary's personal life in any way."
Whatever. Everyone knew what she meant. If anyone else had says this ... I swear ... I am so mad about this ... Nothing at Michelle and nothing at Lonestar. But Michelle's on vacation ... so there ya go.
Statement from Condi:
"I guess that means I don't have kids. Was that the purpose?" Rice said. "At the time I just found it a bit confusing, frankly, in retrospect. I thought single women had come further than that."
I thought they had too Condi, I really thought we all had.

Then, to Rice: "You're not going to pay a particular price, as I understand it, with an immediate family."
