Sports Round-Up
I have a lot of thoughts about sports lately. But what triggered this blog was this headline:
Knight's sins will overshadow his wins
I don't think so.
First of all, the article seems to be written by someone who has read a short bio on Knight rather than followed his career. The transgressions that led Knight to his retirement in Indianna aside (those were inexcuseable) the "slap in the face" that Knight placed on the player at Tech was hardly a slap. He chucked the kid under the chin. And neither the parents, the school, or the offended player were ... well offended. The mainstream media is the bully in that instance, in that they are LOOKING for something to go wrong. They want Knight to blow up so they have something to write about the following day.
What Knight has done for Tech basketball and Tech itself is extraordinary. The team had 3 wins all season prior to Knight coming, and after him they were in the NIT Championship. Since then we have been to the Sweet Sixteen at least twice and all of his players attend class and earn degrees.
What other coach with a record half as good as his can say that?
With all things you take the good with the bad. Does anyone say that Bill Clinton's transgressions overshadow the brilliance of his presence or his presidency? Yeah some do, but no one that's not bleeding Conservative red or claiming to be unbiased.
Knight has issues just like everyone else. But his superb work as a coach is why tonight he will be the most winningest coach in history. And nothing, not even Ian O'Connor of FoxSports can overshadow that.

My other beef. T.O.
I really, really, really dislike T.O. For those of you that don't know. Terrell Owens (T.O.) is the widereciever for the Dallas, Cowboys. He's a new edition this year after he was unceremoniously kept on the bench and then traded by the Philly Eagles last year. Before that he played for the 49ers and I don't know who else. Supposedly, he's awesome. The Cowboys paid $25 million for him. It's ridiculous. And here's why.
When at the 49er's, T.O. spiked the ball in the endzone on the Star after winning in Dallas. Later he spiked the ball in the center of the field (on the Star) after scoring another touchdown.
If you know Texas, we have a thing for our Stars. He was on our "list" after that.
At the Eagles, he did everything he could to offend McNabb, who is a bit of a punk himself. T.O. had such a bad attitude that they benched him once, and then indefinitely because he was poisoneous to their team. Nevermind that the year before he took them to the superbowl.
So T.O. as of the end of last season was up, and the Cowboys, who haven't made it to the finals in something like 5 years, took him. He didn't go to training camp because he didn't need to, he said. He was that good. He was going to run circles around everyone else. Nevermind that we all knew he was going to spend the better part of the season in double coverage, he was going to run for serious yards and make serious touchdowns.
Flashforward to December. The Cowboys are in the post-season (yea us) but T.O. has more dropped balls than any other WR in the league. He has NOT been the blinding beacon of touchdowns he promised to be, and what's worse, he makes Parcels look like a whipping boy and a moron. Last week, when asked about something Parcels said, T.O. replied "I stopped listening to him because I was thinking about my birthday party."
He should have been benched at least a first half for that. He is a cancer, he is "All T.O. all the time." None of his interviews have anything to do with the team except when T.O. screwed up, and then it's the line's fault or more often, the Quaterback (rookie quarterback's) fault for not getting him the ball.
T.O. gives up on passes and would rather not catch the ball than get hit. He doesn't run hard and he just looks like a flagrant moron when he's out there. I really, really wish he would just go away. Except ...
With T.O. in double coverage Jason Witten and Terry Glen are opened up like the 4th of July out there, and they are making plays. With T.O. taking all the press questions and getting all the flak about the games, the likes of Witten, Glen, and more importantly Tony Romo (QB) are left alone. And leaving Romo alone at this crucial stage is ... crucial.
T.O. sells jerseys. Not just his own either, to his dismay. With Glen and Witten running down the field like they were born to do it, their jerseys are out the door too. And Romo ... well Romo is the Savior of the Dallas season, and depending on how he performs the rest of the year, I may via for one myself.
T.O. brings publicity to the franchise. Look at any sports section or any sports website and you will see T.O. and the Cowboys all over it. He's a lightning rod. And as much as I hate the negative press, I know Jerry Jones is loving every minute of it. The more money T.O. makes the franchise, the more money Jones has to spend on our new stadium.
And, it must be said, without T.O. (and Romo) the Cowboys weren't in the post-season. With T.O. (and Romo) the Cowboys are in the post-season. And to hear my husband talk, that's all that matters in this sport. He doesn't get as emotional over this stuff as I do.
Go figure.
So T.O. is a bad, bad, thing. And he is not performing well. The best thing to happen out of this is because he's performed so sub-par, he'll be forced into training camp next summer and he'll improve and next year we'll be rock solid. But for right now, I hope Romo doesn't throw him so much as a look on Sunday. He needs to be taken down a peg.
But Glen and Witten should thank him for taking the heat off. And everyone should thank Tony Romo.
