Reminiscing

This picture was taken of Lew and I after the OU v. Texas Tech game in 2001. Only 5 years ago, but we look like infants. I was twenty, and he was twenty-two, his birthday just a month or so before. I put this up tonight because I got to reminiscing, and looking at old pictures. In the grand scheme of things, I haven't known Lewis that long. But he's been present for a lot of major occurances. My 21st birthday, my first road trip, my first apartment, my first party ... a lot of firsts. And many sadnesses. And I was messing around with the scanner, and I thought I'd scan some of these into the void, so they are always here, digitally, for me to look at and remember. If you're interested, they are HERE.
When I met Lewis he was driving a '99 Toyota Tacoma. He got that truck when he was 19 or so, and he wanted a very specific one. He wanted the Back to the Future truck. You know, the one Marty wants to take to the lake? With the yellow lights on the top and the grille and the whole bit? He wanted that car. And he got the Tacoma.
He took me out on our first date in that truck. We went camping in that truck. We drove across the country, from Houston to Nashville to D.C. in that truck. We drove down the East coast in that truck, from Boston to Virginia. I have always associated that truck with Lew. And I have fond memories of it. I see a black Tacoma on the road now and I remember old, or really younger times. When we would take off on a Friday to sleep one night in a tent and drive home Saturday. We drove that car to Florida for spring break. Me riding all the way to Destin in the "Lew Box," or the back seat which is roughly one foot deep and three feet wide. TINY. Just ask the 4 of us that made the trip!
I loved that truck. I still love that truck. When we moved to Dallas we had to "get rid" of the Tacoma. All we really did was give it back to it's purchaser, his dad. But for me, that truck reminds me of a time in my life where love and a 4X4 was all you really needed. That and George Strait. And I guess really that hasn't changed. Love and a 4X4 is still all you need. It's just now the car with four wheel drive is a Volvo.
