I say Kofi, Kofi ... who-oa, you gotta go NOW! Yeah, yeah, yeah...

Kofi Annan has been the Secretary General at the United Nations since 1997. Since I’ve been old enough to know what a Secretary General is, he’s been it. This is his last year in the post, and he gives his final address today, on American soil. He’s expected to be critical of President Bush and his foreign policies, mainly on Iraq, and he’s expected to call for more aid for the crisis in Darfur.

Because it’s been going on for how long? And Annan has been able to do what there?

I point to two blazing failures when I say the UN is a troubled and ailing organization: 1 – The Oil for Food Program and 2: the Darfur Genocide.

The United Nations Charter states is available at this link. Such pretty words. I especially like “to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom…” It’s lovely, and idealistic and simple.

And it's also hollow.

In the last fifteen years (that's almost since Kofi's been at it's helm coincidentally) the UN has taken leave of it’s senses. Dictators are given credence and their counsel is sought. How does that promote international security or justice for all peoples? I bet the people of Venezuela who had their election stolen from them felt justice done when Chavez was elected.

And then we have the President of Iran.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke at the UN on September 20, 2006, and said the following: “"Sustainable peace and tranquility in the world can only be attained through justice, spirituality, ethics, compassion and respect for human dignity. All nations and states are entitled to peace, progress and security. We are all members of the international community and we are all entitled to insist on the creation of a climate of compassion, love and justice."

But apparently that doesn’t apply to his own people, people of differing faiths, or women. Because clearly by cutting off information and “western influence” he’s giving them justice and respect? Right? And progress, denying Iranians high speed internet certainly promotes progress. And Iran shows so much compassion to the women of it's country. So much love ... so much justice. And the rest of the world sits silent and listens to it happen.

Why does the UN creed not apply to women or those that live under dictatorships? Why are UN employees allowed to take kick backs from Saddam Hussein (another dictator) in the most corrupt handout program ever conceived? How can we support a body of diplomats who say one thing when voting on resolutions banning the sale of products to a dictator, and then take handouts from said dictator in exchange for the banned items?

If it were a private company in the US, it’d be bankrupt and the chief operating officers under subpoena and indictment and criminal charges. It’d be like Enron.

One mistake, one thing, is enough to bankrupt an entire company. And yet the UN is given a pass because it’s overall principles are so “pure.” Well it’s principles and the idea behind them may be, but we are judged by what we do more than by what we say. Kofi Anan may say he is all for saving and protecting the people of Darfur, but his complete lack of action will help history write his place in that tragedy. His eagerness to work with dictators and his overall sliminess will cement him forever. Time will tell how history writes his story, and I for one will not be forgetting his crooked, crooked, endeavors. His nepotism, his anti-American attitude.

So speak on, Kofi about how much you disagree with UN foreign policy in Iraq. Tell us how we shouldn’t have gotten involved there militarily and then demand we take action in Africa.

And ignore the reasons no one has gone into Darfur … because once international forces are in Sudan, they will see the atrocities that are being committed and the men that are responsible will be charged with crimes against humanity.

Aren’t those crimes against humanity why we need to be there? Why are we letting a group of corrupt, racist evil, evil, evil people tell the good guys what to do?

The displaced people of Darfur need a superhero, someone that sees only black and white. Someone that is not so PC as to be ineffective.

In short … they need anyone BUT the UN. So for the incompetent, corrupt, and blindly anti-American Kofi Annan to stand on a pedestal and ask the world to respond and help is just an insult. He could have done more for those people had he only had the courage to stand up and do what was right. Had the international community only had the courage to stand up for what was right. And had they not be guided by oil (China gets a majority of their oil from the Sudan) and religion (Sudan has gained sympathy from Arab countries by aligning themselves with Palestine, Lebanon, and Iraq – as a victim of American’s foreign policy).

The whole thing in the Sudan makes me sad. I hope we can Save Darfur.

And peace out Kofi. Godspeed in all your endeavors. I will not miss you.
