Congrats and let's hope cooler heads prevail...
Congratulations to all of the winners in yesterday's election and my condolences and best wishes to those that lost their seats or their bids for seats. One thing that this election has proven to me, is that democracy works and the will of the people will be the law of the land.
I'll state it again, if our way of life crumbles and perishes each time the opposing party has the power, than democracy is an exorsize in futility and we're all just torturing ourselves. Change is a good thing, and this good thing, as noted at Radio Equalizer, means that the Conservative Grass Roots campaigns will have a greater opportunity to bring real conversatives to the table and to the primaries. So here's to that.
What am I not excited about? Rumsfeld resigning. Why now? President Bush up until this point has stood behind him to the point of delerium, why resign now? Is he caving to the new party leadership? If so, we have a long road to go until 2008. And if he caved to the new bosses in town, I'm disappointed behind measure. What does that point to for the other things upcoming? Se La Vie.
I'm also not excited about a hike in minimum wage. Sure minimum wage should go up to match some of the inflation. Maybe $5.75 an hour as opposed to the $5.15. But I am against a big hike. Why? Because it creates inflation and people need to realize that you can not, repeat, can not, raise a family on minimum wage. There are other jobs out there if you don't have an education. I was in high school and worked at a vet clinic for $8 (still not enough to raise a family, I realize, but the idea is there are jobs out there for uneducated people that pay more than minimum wage, should they want them.)
I'm not excited about a guest worker program. I don't want to punish those that come to this country to work and be productive, but making it more enticing for illegal immigrants to enter this country does not stem the flow. And if you don't live in a border state, I really am not interested. Texas' schools are overrun with children that don't pay property taxes but we wont turn them away. My children will be in a classroom with 35+ kids because they can't afford to pay enough teachers to compensate. Hey Rick Perry - why don't you get on that problem instead of the stupid TransTexas Coorridor project.
I'm not excited about all the subpeonas that are a forgone conclusion. I think what the Republicans did to President Clinton and his cabinet years ago was terrible and brought us to this point today. I want the two sides to work together, and I don't see that happening. I see a lot of turmoil and finger pointing and paybacks. What I do not see is cooperation.
I'm not excited about the repeal of the tax cut or about the tax hike that's going to affect those in in all tax brackets, anyone that's benefiting from "married filing jointly" with two incomes, and anyone that has children. Which is everyone in the middle class mind you. Those that shoulder the tax burden are going to be burdened even further.
I'm not excited about any plan that limits the independence and self-reliance of Americans and instead promotes dependence on our Federal Government. Remember what a crappy job everyone thought the Feds did on Katrina? You want to run into the same problems with your health care? I'm not excited about any plan that punishes those that make money to support and provide for their families and rewards those that are not willing to do what it takes to make their lives better.
And you know what else I'm not excited about? The UN's reaction to our election. I'm not excited that Middle Eastern citizens are glad the Dems are in power.
I am excited that democracy works. I'm glad people voted and their opinions mattered. Not much changed in my home state of Texas. Property taxes will still spiral out of control and Rick Perry will still be able to do little about our borders. Better him than Chris Bell though, who wanted to raise taxes overall and then add a payroll tax. Hey, if somethings broken, raise taxes. That fixes everything.
Don't mind me. I'm not upset the Dems took control. The Reps had it, lost it, and now there's a new sheriff in town. I'm upset about Rumsfeld really, because it points to weakness. If he really thought Rumsfeld should leave, Rumsfeld should have left a long time ago. Doing it the day after just points to fear of the new wave. And we can not be afraid of change.
Funny though, no talk of voter fraud today. Lot's leading up to it ... but none today.
Bring on 2008. Time to get active.
