Welcome October
Thursday, September 28th Lewis's parents picked me up at work to take me to the TCU v. BYU game in Fort Worth. Lewis met us there after he finished up at work. End of quarter and all.
We had a good time, but the game ended badly for the home team. BYU won and TCU lost. Good news that day though, the Astros won and the Cardinals lost. All was looking well for my baseball heroes.
But then yesterday and today happened and the magic that enveloped Astros fans for the last ten days dissipated. But there's a lot of hope for next year. And as countless baseball fans have said for years, we'll get 'em next year.
Anyway. Friday was a long night for Lew at work. I took him and his co-workers pizza at about 9:30 if that's any indication of how long they worked. Saturday Tech played A&M in Aggieland so we got together with the other Red Raiders in Fort Worth to cheer them on. It was fantastic. We were up, we were down, we made mistakes ... but sometimes a Pirate can beat a Soldier.
If you don't get it, it's okay. You have to look back at last years trash talk between coaches. Texas A&M has a great ROTC program and brings many good men and women into the military through their ROTC, Army and Navy being the biggest I think, I don't have the numbers. Anyway, A&M also has this seperate thing called the Corps of Cadets. Now, you can be in the Corps and not be in the ROTC program. You still have to take the ROTC classes and you go through the training, you just don't accept the commission at the end of your Senior year. The Corp of Cadets rush the field when A&M wins, they stand by the end zone at attention I think for the full game. Not certain. They are really dedicated. And if I didn't go to a rival school in the state of Texas, I might even admire them. But in a rival Texas school you're kind of taught that they are more like a cult than anything else, with all the kids speaking in Aggie code and doing matching hand signals at coordinated moments. So Leach made a comment in December 2005 about how he wanted to start his own Corps, a Corps of Pirates (supposedly he has an interest in pirate lore). Thus came about the Pirate and Soldier comparisons. So it was a real big dig that he said "Sometimes a Pirate beats a Soldier" on Saturday after the game. It was even more controversial because Franchione is tanking over at A&M and everyone hates him and if he doesn't pull this season together he's going to lose his job. And Tech has beat A&M 5 of the last 6 meetings. We don't "sometimes" beat them...we almost always beat them! Wreck 'Em Tech!
Sigh. Just another Rowdy Game day.
The other cool thing about being in Fort Worth on Saturday, the Air Show was going on right behind our friends house practically. I saw the Thunderbirds! Who are amazingly awesome. It was great. They did some fantastic tricks in the air and flew right over our heads. It was awe inspiring.
Let's see what else? Sunday I got up and planned six meals. I got my cookbooks out and wrote down ingredients and took that to the store and now we won't be limited to our "usual" fare. Although that is still available to us.
And tonight, in celebration (early) of Lewis's birthday tomorrow, I made Beef Bourguignon with creamy mashed tomoatoes. I failed to take any pictures of it plated, and its of course all gone now. But here's what it looked like mid way through. It turned out very well, though I think the instructions in this book (a non-Racheal Ray book) were, well, wrong. The beef is cut up into biteable pieces and then cooked on the stove top and then cooked at 350 for 2, count them 2 hours! Never one to like her meat chewy and over cooked, I cut that to just an hour and a half.
Next we go back to Racheal Ray for Orange Chicken and some other yummy treats that take only 30 minutes.
Once you go 30 minutes, you never go back.
