I voted for Meredith
But there wasn't really an election, so there you have it.
In a world were women are constantly screaming for equal pay, equal rights, equal time, equal opportunity, equal everything ... there is one place where no two women are treated equally ... television. Men have dominated this field since it's inception, and women have played nice little window draperies to their hard line journalism.
And who know who promotes this? Katie Couric.
I liked the Today Show. It's a fun little bit of news with your coffee with 15 minutes of hardline news thrown in at the top of every hour. And occasionally a good hard piece where Katie or Matt interviews a Senator or a Doctor or something like that. But Katie Couric is no Barbara Walters or even a Jane Pauley. Those women moved from jobs like Katie's (Jane had Katie's job prior to her taking over) to the magazine shows. I haven't looked up how they are doing over there ... I'm sure NBC is leading the pack, but they are doing a sight better than Katie is over at the nightly news. Diane Sawyer, who is a correspondent on ABC's World News with Charlie Gibson, is actually doing well in the ratings. And what is she reporting on? She's in North Korea, interviewing the ambassador.
Katie refuses to travel. Diane Sawyer is getting many allcolades and applauses for her reporting in North Korea. Katie is getting beat over the head with criticism because her reporting is whimpy, touchy-feely, and reminiscient of the fluff pieces they aired over at Today.
Now Diane was passed over for Katie's job and Gibson's job. I'm sure she's not thrilled. But I bet she's happy as a clam that her piece in North Korea is kicking butt while Katie's getting slammed in the ratings. According to Drudge, last night Katie was 7th place behind a Friends re-run. Not good.
I would have hoped that when a woman came into the anchor chair at a nightly news program she'd be making the most of it, and doing everything in her power to make it better. Shake things up, show them women can do it better. Something. Like Verne Gay over at Newsday.com said, "Ms. Couric, ask yourself this. After 15 years at the "Today" show, where the winning came easy, do you want to beat your rivals into a pulp? If the answer is "yes," then charge!! "
But instead under Katie women are being "side-lined" in favor of men coorespondents, either to make Katie look better or from indifference. I have no idea. All I do know, is that with the opportunity to make history before her, I expected her to do more with it.
