Peggy Noonan gets many things.
None more so than the decline of television, which technically, as she says, isn't really a decline, it's progress.
She says it better than me:
Yeah. I miss standards. I can't watch network news or cable news anymore for any prolonged period of time. It's like watching Buffy the Vampire slayer over and over again, it just makes you dumb. At least people that write the news still have to maintain a modicum of AP style. Though they throw that out the window a lot too.
And I love bloggers. Bloggers are what have turned the tides against the goliaths, including the cable channels but specifically ABC, CBS, and NBC. The internet is a gigantic resource, and its available to us all. The Bloggers are David. And yeah maybe some of them do wear pajamas. But ask Dan Rather if he'll under estimate them again.

I spoke with a network producer a few weeks ago, an old warhorse who was trying to explain his frustration at the current ratings race. He wrestled around the subject, and I cut with rude words to what I thought he was saying. "You mean it's gone from the dictatorship of a liberal elite to the dictatorship of the retarded."
Yes, he said. And it's not progress. When liberals miss something in the media, that's what they should be missing. Not a unity that never existed but standards that were high. When conservatives say there's nothing to miss, they're wrong. We lost some bias, but we lost some standards, too.
