A Team of Destiny?

I can not believe I'm writing this post. In fact, I almost have to check myself before I write it, making sure I'm not jinxing us. Point of fact, I could be jinxing it, as the 'Stros haven't had a winning streak this good all season.

But man, they look good.

Last night after a HUGE win over the Pirates, after the final out in the 9th, all eyes were on St. Louis. It was looking grim, with the Cards up in the 8th. But then the Padres scored and were two runs over. I know that Lew and I were cheering. Because what does it mean that the NL Central leader, the Cards, lost and the 'Stros won? It means that the Houston Astros are only 1.5 games back from clinching the division pennant.

There are 5 games left in the season. The Astros are above .500 for the first time since sometime in July I think? We're on a seven game winning streak. What does this mean? It means that for the next five games, the Cards have to fall apart and the Astros have to play like its game seven every single night.

The Cardinals have to lose three and we have to win three. Or something like that.

Like the guy on PTI said last night, the Astros know no other way to play ball. They go into every fall with this kind of thing, but if they pull this off it will be the most miraculous come back ever.

And I have to say, win or lose, I love my Astros. And for the next five games I will be glued to the set watching who does what and I'll have one eye on our guys and the other eye on the Cardinals.

But it sure would be great if we played in October. :) It's hard not to get excited when MLB.com is printing comments like this one:

The Astros, 79-78, are a game over the .500 mark for the first time since they were 37-36 on June 22. In the span of just one week, the Astros went from non-contenders to favorites to win the division. And they're starting to wonder if they're in for a third straight miracle season.

Oh if only it were so! Another miracle season. Hmm....such a sweet, sweet thought. And as Mr. Ortiz over at the Houston Chron asks, are the Houston Astros the team of destiny this year? Oh if it were true! You don't know how my heart flutters at the thought.

Baseball is something that gets into your skin. I'm not quite sure how it got under mine, as I didn't grow up in a home where sports were at all prevelant. But my husband's family ... that's what binds them together. It's what they discuss, what they analyze, what they rally behind (among other things). And I have to say this love of sports has helped me in other arenas. Sports are a common denominator, like the weather, they are an easily discussed topic and come up often around the water cooler. Did you see the Rangers game last night? 13 innnings! or How about the Mav's making it? I'm so glad we beat the Suns, bet Steve Nash is upset. Or whatever.

But unlike basketball or football, which yes I'm forced to follow as well, baseball has gotten to me. Maybe it's the movies or the whole aura surrounding the sport; America's favorite past-time and hotdogs and simple things. But whatever it is I've adopted it as my favorite, and following this entire season has been a joy to me. I know the Astros, I know their players and I know how much they want this. I can say that about no other team in Baseball or any other sport, and I know that other teams want it just as bad, but somewhere in my heart of hearts I feel that the Houston Astros deserve it. And I want very badly to see them win.

Regardless, what I love the most about this team is what it has done to Houston. Houstonians rally around this team like the Boston fans rally around the Red Sox, like New Yorkers do the Yankees. The last few seasons the Houston Astros have changed Houston into a baseball town. We sell out games all the time, and my favorite players get to play to a full crowd. Aubrey Huff, new this year and a great add by the way, had a home run that drove in three runs the other night, a big win for us against the Cards. A full Minute Maid park screamed out his name and cheered. He used to play for the Marlins, who do not sell out games. The announcer made the comment that for Aubrey, already a few years into his career, that might have been his first great moment in the professional sport.

Here's to hoping there are many more. Rain, shine, win, or lose...I support my Astros and commend them for a rock star performance these past ten days. They've played baseball with intelligence, charisma and heart. They are the team of destiny, to my mind.

I'm excited to see what plays out in the games ahead. Go Astros! And I'm not usually one to do this ... but Cardinals ... please lose. :)
