Grandparents Day
I was writing a card to my Grandmother for Grandparents Day (September 10th) and I got to thinking about all the mail I’ve received over the years. Lewis, his brother Matt, and I were talking about old TV shows (Gummy Bears and Darkwing Duck specifically) and then I got on the subject of Ranger Rick, a very fun little magazine for children that has pictures of animals and little activities inside. It was the very first piece of mail that came to me once a month. Before that I got cards at birthdays, but Ranger Rick was my very first piece of mail that came on a regular day, not only on my birthday, and it was just for me. (Megan got baby animals or some baby version of the magazine!)
I’ve always gotten mail from my Grandmother Severs. Every birthday I got a card, every time she saw a story in the paper she thought I’d like she would cut it out and send it to me. I honestly think the only reason I still mail letters today is because my Grandmother is a wonderful pen pal. When I was in college she would send me lots of things, mostly from the Wichita Eagle, and usually they were stories about college kids bugging their parents for money, or writers that were starting out in the world, our how to get yourself published. They didn’t arrive regularly or on any kind of schedule. But every few weeks or months, when she saw something that reminded her of me I guess, she’d write me a letter.
I didn’t keep all the letters from my Grandmother. It’s a shame really. I have a box of letters that I have kept over the years, and many of them are from my Grandmother, but I know had I kept them all I’d have to have a much larger box. I’m glad I’ve kept some of them, as my children may one day be interested to know what their Great Grandmother had to say. I was just thinking about that today, as I wrote my card out to Grandmother.
And I did keep several letters from one time in my life … I was baptized Easter Sunday 2003, and my family couldn’t be with me but they all sent me cards. I got more cards then than I had on my birthday, and I really, really liked that. I kept those cards. They are in a scrapbook.
Grandparents day is September 10th, and even if it does make money for Hallmark and is just another excuse they’ve created for people to buy greeting cards, Grandparents really like getting mail from their Grandkids. And what’s $4 against that kind of happiness?
