That's Just the Way It Is
As fighting continues and as political hacks around the world carry their heads in their hands in worry, Hugo Chavez went to Russia to sign arms deals. He visited there after visiting another US favorite, Belarus and signed cooperation agreements with that dictator.
So Iran and Syria are buddies, Russia, Belarus, North Korea, and Venezuela are all buddies, the entire world hates Israel, United States is calling for peace but no "status quo", and the UN is begging for "an immediate cease fire."
On this list available via Slate.com, Israel has two friends, the EU and the US. I'd beg to differ on that EU thing considering France and Germany's none position on this whole situation, but whatever. With friends like those who needs enemies. Israel certainly doesn't need anymore. They've got enough scary people on their list.
And Israel is now attempting to introduce a buffer zone between its border and Lebanon, and then allow an international force to come in and protect it. It actually sounds like the most reasonable solution I've heard so far. Rather than all this cow-towing to terrorists. They call them Lebanese fighters because they aren't Lebanese regular military, they are a "political party" as the MSM likes to call them which really means they are a terrorist organization (as recognized by all governments that matter - including UN) . So how can we bow our heads to a terrorist organization. There's a quote from Star Trek (yes I'm nerd) Generations where Jean Luc Picard is talking to Alfre Woodard's character and she is trying to get him to blow up the ship to kill the borg and save themselves or something like that, I can't remember. But this scene really resonantes with me on the issue of freedom:
Alfre then turns to him and says something witty and alludes to an earlier conversation in the movie, calls him Ahab (from Moby Dick) and turns and leaves. Jean Luc eventually does blow up the ship and save the day, because truly the Enterprise is not too big a sacrifice in the quest to destroy them. But look at the rest of it, "We've made too many compromises already, too many retreats." Amen. Terrorism has done exactly that. How far will we let it go? Will we let the leaders of Iran fulfill their dream of destroying Israel? And how long will it be until, after they've done that, they try to fulfill their other goal of destroying the US?
I know people don't like "cowboy politics" or lines in the sand ... but to quote Josey Wales:
That's just the way it is.

"Now remember, things look bad and it looks like you're not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean. I mean plumb, mad-dog mean. 'Cause if you lose your head and you give up then you neither live nor win. That's just the way it is."
That's just the way it is.
