Let's Make Nice, But I'm Going To Say I'm Not Ready
Let's deconstruct the Dixie Chicks new song.
Let me start by saying its the biggest load of poop I've seen in a while. Musically, it's a catchy song. And if the chicks are good at anything its hooks. The hook in this song is no exception. But let's go over the lyrics and the meaning, and see how, after a three year absence, the Chicks are trying to get back into the good graces of fans they irritated. Or how they are trying to get back in, but look like they arent.
Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I’m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I’m still waiting
Okay hold the phone Ms. Maines. Who's forgiving who? From where I sit, you need me and my money, I don't need you. So starting off this dialogue with you having a hard time moving on isn't really my problem. And really, you are ready to forgive, or at least your record label is, because while you think you're a political icon, your label knows your a dancing monkey that brings in money. And while I understand your right to free speech and your entitled to your opinion, don't go off on how you have to forgive me! I didn't do anything. You did. Forgive yourself. You irritated your fan base and cost yourself money. You didn't do anything to me except reveal your true feelings. And I actually appreciate that. Because it'll save me money when I go to buy cds. I wont be buying yours.
I’m through with doubt
There’s nothing left for me to figure out
I’ve paid a price
And I’ll keep paying
At least this part you have right. Though I don't really think you're "through with the doubt." If you were would you be saying this to thousands of people? I think you're doubtful people will like this new song, that's what I think.
I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
Well then I'm not ready to either. And that means no cd buying for me. This is no way to start an apology. Or to ease back into the mainstream. You should be quiet. I hadn't thought about this whole thing in a long time. Now I remember and now I'm angry. Didn't your publicist give you any pointers? And why in the royal world did your label choose to release this song first? To remind people of controversy? What a mistake.
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
And here is the issue. You're mad. What for? Because people exorcised their free speech same as you? Because people didn't agree with you? What crap. You can talk bad about my country in London but then you're countrymen decide they don't want to buy your crap or listen to your songs on the radio anymore and that makes YOU mad? Please. You made your bed -- but I guess you get to that in a minute -- lie in it.
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should
What do I think you should do exactly? You already apologized for speaking like that in the wrong forum. You didn't back down from what you said, and I don't think you should have to. I don't have to buy your CD's either. So there. I can't bring myself to do what you think I should. (buy the cd)
I know you said
Can’t you just get over it
Who said that? I didn't say that. I don't care if you get over it or not. Your'e asking the public to get over it Natalie, we don't care if you get over it or not.
It turned my whole world around
And I kind of like it
Then why is this song so angry if you like it? Happy people like things, not angry people.
I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
Hmm...not buying this either. How long did it take you to write this song? How many nights did you stay up thinking "Oh Lord I've ruined my Career and Lubbock, my home town, won't let me play a concert there?" Come on Natalie, if you're going to say stuff like this, at least try and make us believe it.
With no regrets and I don’t mind sayin’
It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
I don't hate you Natalie, I hate what you said. I hate that you, in a time of war, bad mouthed your country and your state on foreign soil. You forgot that Americans, Texans, are your bread and butter. You made your name on their taste and their money and you abused that. Now, it is sad if someone is teaching hate. But I think generally, you're misrepresenting hating you for hating what you did.
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they’d write me a letter
Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over
Now this is terrible. And you are right. No one should say bad things like this to someone, even a friend let alone someone they dont' know. But you'd never met the President Natalie, you just assumed based on what you read that he was an idiot and he embarrassed you. Well, the public has decided, based on your comments and what we know about you, that we don't like you. And how is that different from the assumptions you made? You don't know the President personally. But he's a public figure and as such he's open to debate, ridicule, and meanness. And while the "shut-up and sing" comment is hurtful to you, please understand your role in your publics life. You're an entertainer. People don't listen to your music to think about politics or to listen to hate speech or to hear the President belittled. They like a catchy country beat they can dance to and listen to with their children. So while "shut up and sing" is harsh, its partially true. We don't care what you believe. We like your music. But now, because you decided what you believe is more important than your music and your fans, we won't be buying your music anymore. Or, at least I won't. Some people have moved on and don't care any more. I, however, do care. And I support no one that does not support the mission of our military.

(Chorus repeats)
