I Don't Support You Either

Joel Stein, a writer for the LA Times and apparently a writer for the ABC sitcom Crumbs (so sad its on my favorite network) has a ludicrous and shameful column today in his paper. I intially saw this on Drudge, as I imagine the rest of the conversative blogging press did.

The title of his piece is, Warriors and Wusses and the first line is "I don't support our troops." On one hand, I think it is the most honest I've heard a liberal be on the topic, I think they all feel the way he does, that "The truth is that people who pull triggers are ultimately responsible, whether they're following orders or not. An army of people making individual moral choices may be inefficient, but an army of people ignoring their morality is horrifying." Everyone who is against the War on Terror thinks this way, just none of them admit it.

But his blatant misunderstanding of the role of the military, and his disregard for their feelings, their sacrifices, and their duty is shameful and evil. I can not even begin to express how repulsed I am by this column, and I know that makes him happy. I know that when he wrote that he was hoping for buzz to generate, for his internet page to get over a 100K hits. I know that the reaction from the blogsphere is exactly what he was hoping for. I wonder how many people read his last column on his work on Crumbs, probably no one.

Well Mr. Stein, you don't support our troops, well let me put it to you this way - I don't support you. And while my military family is out there putting their life on the line so you can enjoy your freedom of speech and your free press sheild, I hope you take up a history book and take a look at our militaries illustrious and prestigous history. Without those that take arms, there would be no United States, there would be no California, and there would be no LA Times. So before you go rambling off and naming Vietnam as your only reference, take a look at how many freedoms you enjoy because of the efforts of my military family. Without their action, their sacrifice and their patriotism, who's to say that the Japanese would have stopped at Pearl Harbor? Who's to say if they wouldn't have encroached on California's coast and blown up the precious building in which you write from?

Before you start admitting that you don't support our troops, maybe you should wonder what your world would be like without them.

Oh, and each military officer and enlisted man and woman takes an oath upon acceptance of service that states they will defend the country when the country calls. So when Congress gave the President the ability to take our military to war, they didn't ask why or what for. They went, bravely. And they will stay as long as their country asks them to. And while they are there will shoot and kill anyone that threatens them or the peace they are trying to instill. They are not the arm of an imperialist society, because we have taken no land for anything but the burial of our dead. We do not own Germany, or Italy, or any other country that has had the misfortune to come against our brave men and women.

Shame on you, Mr. Stein. Shame on you and may the day never come when you need our military and they aren't there, at the ready, able and willing to protect you.
