Democracy brings terrorists to power

"God is its target, the Prophet is its model, the Qur'an its constitution: Jihad is its path and death for the sake of God is the loftiest of its wishes."

This is the slogan of Hamas. Hamas is now, as of yesterday, the ruling party in the Palistinian Legilstaive Council. The slogan is part of the Covenant, written in 1988. And this convenant states that their goal is to "raise the banner of God over every inch of Palestine." There are 36 articles, and this group is a branch of Eygpt's Muslim Brotherhood. In the 70s, Israel actually supported Hamas because they felt they were an answer to the PLO. Now, Israel, the European Union, Canada, and the United States have listed Hamas as a terrorist organization, and no not recognize them as a viable political entity. The UN, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have condemned Hamas' acts of violence against Israelis.

In short, this is a group that none of the free world will work with, because they are violent thugs who blow up their men with promises of virgins in Heaven in order to kill Israelis.

Hamas takes up with the likes of Iran in their desire to whip Israel off the face of the map. They also do not believe that the Holocaust took place. As lately as 2004 their leadership said this. They blame westerners for the "Zionist invasion" and for drug trafficking. They are quoted in their covenant to this end: "There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad."

This is a scary, scary organization. And now they have control of one of the weakest and most abused groups of people. And while some are saying that the election went well and democracy succeeded, one has to wonder. The German's elected Hitler too.

The battle between Israel and Palestine is Biblical, and has been going on for centuries. But in this day and age, with nuclear weapons spoken about as often as "negotiation," this is a scary prospect in deed.

And as the New York Times Op Ed points out today, Isreal has long claimed that the road to peace was blocked because they had no one to negotiate with. Now that appears to be true. It would be hard to negotiate with a group that has sworn to wipe you out. The Times is more forgiving then I am prone to be, and they think that like the PLO under Arafat, Hamas will mellow and remove the terrorism and violence they plan to pursue from their charter. I am wishful that that will happen, but I can not shake the bad feeling. But at least they agreed with the President in his statement that the United States will not work with or recognize a terrorist group as a legitimate government.

Listen to what this idiot at the Washinton Post has to say about what the United States should do:

"But it is pointless to bemoan this setback or try to minimize its significance, as President Bush seemed to do yesterday in a White House news conference. Israel, the United States and Europe should instead adjust their policies to recognize and influence the volatile situation created by the unexpected and distinctly unwelcome Hamas victory."

Somewhere, our founding fathers are rolling over their graves.

He says we should what? Hamas still intends to wipe Israel off the map and don't want to negotiate. How should we change our policies to effectively deal with that? "Okay, so you don't like Israel, maybe, then say, do you like people? Oh you like people! We'll work with you then. Oh only Muslim people...hmmm...you gotta work with me here..."

These people teach every Muslim that Israel is evil and that the land they inhabit is rightly theres and they should all be willing to die for it. And by all I mean men, because their women are brutally abused and neglected in the governmental process. At least the women don't have to drive a bus into a cafe and blow children up. They can save that glory for their newborn sons.

He goes on here:

"The United States, Israel and the European Union should deal with any government that emerges from fair and free elections, including one led by Hamas. Not to do so would, among other things, make a mockery of Bush's campaign to stabilize the Middle East by spreading democracy there."

Is it just me, or is his tongue in his cheek? It's almost like he's saying, "See what happens when you let the Middle East have free elections?" Maybe I'm being too sensitive.

Regardless, acknowledging and working alongside a known terrorist organization is not the correct message to send. Israel is scared now, I would assume, and with Iran threatening to eradicate them as well...

The thing about this that worries me the most, is in school when I was learning about the Holocaust, the only thing that stuck with me was the fact that someone told me that when we forget, and when people don't realize the horror of that event, it will happen again. Right now, in 2005, we have two very powerful groups claiming that the Holocaust was a fabrication by the Western world to give legitimacy to Israel. I am not the only one who is unnerved by the developments of yesterday, but the Washington Post is not giving the weighted legitimacy this crisis deserves. Terrorists, powerful ones, now control a group of the most underpriviledged, uneducated, and beleagured group of people in the Middle East. In the Holocaust museum in Washington, D.C., on the first floor (because I only made it through that part) there is a section on Hitler's rise to power. It started because Germans were suffering.

I'm overreacting, perhaps. But it will be interesting to see how the world reacts and deals with this new entity. And will Hamas decide that their wish will be no to destroy Israel, but to restore peace and dignity to the Palestinian people? One can hope. I do sincerely hope and pray that that is the case. But I have to wonder, in a culture so indoctrinated with the belief that anyone who is not a Muslim is their enemy, how will they continue the peace process with Israel? Or will they?

As is my way, I have done some research on Hamas. What I am learning terrifies me. I almost wish I had not Googled this wretched group, and then I could continue on in my ignorance.

All things beautiful has a great piece. As always Michelle Malkin has links to many good stories and opinions. Read the Washington Post article if you want to see what the Left wants everyone to do. Crazy people.

And here's an interesting piece, the Christian Science Monitor says the problem now is safe guarding the democractic process in Palestine, because in his view, these types of groups, once they win, create governments that keep them in power. Greeeeaaaattt. Terrorism forever.

And lets not forget the LA Times: "... the organization that once routinely dispatched suicide bombers into Israel has mostly refrained from such attacks for about the last year."

Mostly refrained? What does that mean? I know when I mostly did my homework I still pretty much got an F. Almost only works in horseshoes and handgrenads LAT! And according to what I read today, on 9/24/05 a transport of Hamas rockets exploded accidentally but Hamas said it was an Israeli attack and then shot Qassam rockets at Israel. Is that what he means by "mostly refrained?" BTW - the Palestinian Authority and Israel, neither found evidence that supported Hamas' claim. So it looks like blew up their own rockets and then shot at Israel anyway.

Scary stuff -- if I find more interesting columns I'll let you know.
