They're Waiting
I wasn't alive for the Vietnam war. I didn't see the television stories or hear the news or see how much turmoil was in this country over it. But as it's been taught to me in school, the American people hated the war, there was no support, and we left. That's what my "government school" education taught me, as Neal Boortz would say.
But at Yahoo news today, there is an article with a quote from the #2 Al Qaeda operative. The quote is the United States "ran and left their agents" in vietnam. And it instructs Al Qaeda to have a plan ready for if the US should suddenly leave.
A story posted at The Lone Star times postes links to the letter that was recieved and notes the letters "admission that more than half the struggle is taking place "in the battlefield of the media."
So let me get this straight -- based on the Veitnam template, the jihadists are just going to keep going with their IED's and car bombings to innocent Iraqi children, and then eventually the US will leave. Just becase. Well, mostly because, as the letter notes, the jihadists know that the American media (all media) are against the war and against the President. And if that keeps up he will be forced to removed the troops.
And even the followers of the President are mad at him these days. With failing poll numbers there's been little to no support from the leaders of the GOP for Tom Delay. And with little to no support from the American public or the Democrats in office, the White House nominated Harriett Miers to the bench. I haven't studied her, I don't know her, but I know that she is a wild card as far as Roe v. Wade goes, and that makes the GOP base very angry. So what you are looking at is a President that's both hated on the left and resented on the right. "Mr. President you are stupid" the left says, "Mr. President we elected you and now you cow-tow to the left" the right says. Not that I am against Miers. I don't know anything about her and as far as I know every justice on the Supreme Court hasn't necessarily been a judge before. And according to Drudge, the White House wanted to nominate a woman, and many of the women on the short list asked not to be considered due to the acerbic nature of the press and the position. They didn't want to put their families through it.
So I ask you, in a country riddled with dissent and anger, what are we going to do about terrorism? The media keeps talking about how the threat to the NYC subway system was a false alarm and the government shouldn't have alerted everyone, blah blah blah, or at least, that's what they keep asking people "Should the government have alerted the public the way that they did?" I don't know about you but the implication to me is that the media thinks the government should have kept their mouth shut. I disagree. And I think the people of London would disagree.
When a bomb threat is called into a school, no matter by whom or when or how silly it may sound, the school reacts to it. They close the school down, they send in police, they search they seek they destroy. I would guess 999,999 out of 1 million times the bomb threat is a hoax. But every single time the school will take it seriously. The risk is too great. The same is true of NYC and any terrorist threat. Better safe then sorry.
So, what are we going to do about terrorism? If you listen to some its a problem we will never get rid of so we should live and let live. The Clinton model, if you will. "Oh they bombed the embassy? Shame on you bad terrorrists. Our nation grieves but we will move on." That's it. No retaliation. So for years this goes on and finally we react, and now our people are too weak to carry on. Are they right? Should we pull out? Were we better off under the Clinton model?
It seems to me like the grown-ups are asking for their innocence back. But once the veil is removed, you can not ignore what you've seen. Now that we know what the terrorists are capable of, now that we know what they are planning on doing (waiting for the US to give up and go home) what will we do? They are waiting for us to leave, to pack up and go home so they can take over the region. Now, from a gazillion miles away I dont care. But my feeling is that they wont quit terrorizing us and others.
Now that we've seen what's behind the curtain ... are we going to turn around and go home? Or are we going to try and do something about it?
