Hooray for Governors!
Today I discuss an article that appears above the fold on the cover of USA Today. It appears that out of 38 governors surveyed, 13 flat out said they hated the idea of the Federal Government being in charge of natural disaster relief. 11 Governors said they wanted more information, and 12 declined to comment. Only 2 supported the idea, one being Mitt Romney. Hmm ... wonder what his motivations are. Though he does make a good point, if the states require the relief money comes from the Feds, shouldn't the Feds be in control?
Read the Constitution. That's what I say. Like this section: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
Now I know that there is a whole section on how the Congress can send people into the states to protect them, and that if the Congress is not in session the White House can do this, but I don't like the idea of the first line of defense in a time of crisis being someone in Washington. It just doesn't make sense. Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida respond to their own natural disasters and do fine. Louisiana is the state that screwed up. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater on this one guys. Let the states do what they've done for years, take care of themselves.
